Mad Hatter story

There is perhaps no individual in all of Teleria more aptly named than the Mad Hatter. In his own words, he is "rather mad indeed" and wears an "absolutely delightful hat".

The Mad Hatter is a dark sorcerer and potion-maker whose techniques would elicit derisive laughter, horrified cries or demands for permanent imprisonment, or even execution, from experts if they knew about them. Generally considered reckless and dangerous by most Revenant Knights, the Hatter was left to his own devices for a time, until the Queen of Hearts discovered him.

Too mad and obsessed with his special work to threaten her position, but skilled enough to be a useful asset, he was the ideal wizard to serve the vain and impulsive Queen. Delighted at the prospect of finally being recognized by someone, the Hatter gleefully set about forging a key with a queen's crown symbol for a head. He hung it on his hat to signal that his creations belonged to the sovereign and that his loyalty to her was "double-locked".

The source of the Hatter's madness is, in part at least, his hat. It was an element of his most formative experience and is magically fused to his head. Bewitched by dozens of spells, and imbued with potions of magical protection and absorption, the hat was designed by the Hatter to protect him on a quest to the Lost Isles long ago.

He traveled to the great volcano known as the Gorge, rumored to be the home of a monstrous power that defied comprehension. The Hatter had no idea that the ineffable beast who called himself the Demon Lord was there. His magical protections were nothing in the face of the Demon Lord's hallucinogenic, reality-altering radiation. As a result, the Hatter went mad and his hat became impossible to remove.

The Hatter may have gone mad, but this only fueled his imagination, totally altering the way he conceived his spells and tested his recipes for potions and tinctures. He created what ended up being his most precious tools: a clawed staff above which a small, magically suspended, self-heating cauldron spins, and a teapot. The latter is no ordinary household object.

She is totally conscious, trumpeting and screaming as soon as the Hatter's last brew is finished. On the other hand, she raves and rambles with the Hatter for hours, suggesting other ingredients, telling lewd jokes or making terrible puns. In public, she loves to insult passers-by before pretending to be totally inanimate so that the Hatter can be blamed.

The way Le Chapelier conceives his creations and concoctions is unique every time he sets to work. He follows no rules or conventions.

For some recipes, he adds quantities of ingredients chosen after drawing cards. A seven will mean seven pinches of kidney stone dust or seven crow's feet, for example. Taking care to mix the deck in various ways after each draw, he assures us that it is almost impossible for him to repeat a creation, as chance directs him as much as his demented genius, and that of his teapot.

The Mad Hatter's timing methodology also deviates from the norm. He wears a large pocket watch, as it's always best to be punctual with the Queen of Hearts, who gives him the time from anywhere in Teleria on command. The moment a potion is brewed can be crucial.

He has plenty of ideas, such as "lunch in Kaerok, dinner in Krokhan, it's the death of a spell" and "never brew when the sun goes down in Durham". The Hatter knows that for some creations, making them when it's tea time in the Lakes of Sorrow, or midnight in Nyresa, is optimal or worst.

It was the Hatter who informed the Queen of Hearts of the immense insectoid power residing in the heart of Durham Forest. Why would he do such a thing? Because he knew that his mighty, splendid, magnificent, wise and true Queen would want to know about it and would want to reclaim what she could. She was the only one who understood him, as far as anyone could understand him.

She let him build parts of her grand palace, including her chessboard-inspired courtroom and croquet lawn, with ponds and lakes that would easily surpass any other in all of Teleria. More selfishly, he too wanted to go to Durham. He and his teapot had been fantasizing for years about what they could do with the stings, chitins, claws, venom, petals, pollen and fungi of over a hundred thousand varieties of deadly species not found anywhere else.

There were no limits. No limits at all. And what if they could learn from the Insect Lords themselves? It was enough to make the teapot boil with excitement. The Hatter chuckled and jumped up and down as they speculated over cups of tarantula fang and mint infusion.
