Vast and rich is the dwarf kingdom that stretches beneath the Mountains of Despair, its halls of carved stone and gold glittering with splendor in the light of myriad braziers. But the Mountains are ancient, their caverns extending far beyond the dwarf king's domain, deep into the bowels of Teleria, and many mysteries await in the shadows.
Some dwarves are looking for these mysteries.
These madmen willingly abandon the safety of their holds and venture into the forgotten passages of the basement to live their hermitic lives. Most of them are never heard from again. But for every thousand failures, there may be one who has enough strength to become a legend. Long ago, Brogni served the kingdom as one of the guardians of the runes, clerics charged with gathering and preserving the knowledge of the dwarves.
He was wise and knowledgeable in the ways of history, a mentor to many of his young peers and an advisor to the king who ruled at the time. But the deeper he delved into the legends of yesteryear, the more questions Brogni had. He became obsessed with the origins of his race, the ancient cradle that was said to lie far beneath the earth's crust, deep within the mountains. Finding no answers in the vast libraries of the capital, he vowed to unravel the mystery himself.
With his apprentices and loyal warriors by his side, Brogni left the kingdom of the dwarves and set out to explore the ancient ruins that lay beneath his feet. For years, his expedition made its way into the unknown depths, gathering fragments of the past from each ruin they discovered.
The dangers they faced were too terrible to recount, and one by one, Brogni's disciples fell in battle, their remains buried with whatever honors could be afforded them. Soon, the old guardian of the runes found himself alone, wandering in darkness with no hope of salvation.
That was when he stumbled upon a cave where an emerald light shone. Precious stones of all shapes and sizes sprouted from the walls, sparkling in the artificial light that pierced the darkness. In the silence of the underground world, a soft melody full of sadness and nostalgia caught Brogni's attention; mesmerized, he entered and followed the sound until it led him to a gargantuan crystal that sat enthroned in the center of the cave.
His polished body pulsed with light, and the lament that had trapped Brogni's spirit seemed to come from within. He sat there and listened to the song of the earth. Several centuries had passed, and all memory of the rune guardian Brogni had faded into dust. So there were no dwarves left alive to recognize the ancient warrior when he emerged from the depths to join his people in the battle against the demonic creatures.
Yet they could respect his skill and the hatred he bore the invaders. With his mass of burning arcane crystals, the stranger struck horror after horror, while the spell chants he uttered enveloped the dwarf warriors in protective magic. Over time, Brogni revealed his name and origins—in part—but he would tell no one of the wonders he had witnessed or the mysteries he had unraveled.
For now, his sole objective was to help the dwarves return to the surface and ensure that the foul creatures of Siroth could no longer threaten the world below, and so he had pledged his allegiance to the new king of the mountain. Today, Brogni accompanies the dwarf host to the world above.
He is a strange creature, a cleric of an unknown religion who does not seem to want to convert others. For now. But whatever strange rituals he follows and whatever his beliefs, it is clear that the Underpriest is no friend to the Demonspawn or their minions. For that reason alone, he is a valuable asset to those seeking to advance Lumaya's goals in Teleria.
