History of Chevalier Cerf
The true name of the stag knight has long been set aside and forgotten, just as his face remains hidden, even from his closest allies, behind an ornate helmet. But armor forged from the finest steel and decorated with gold and silver leaves little doubt as to the origins of this champion, for such a combination of style and craftsmanship can only be found in the land of Kaerok.
In itself, this revelation does not mean much: countless Knights Errant have forged ahead from Kaerok to leave their mark across Teleria and earn glory for themselves. It is not uncommon for them to have displayed sufficient bravery and skill to attract the attention of the Arbiter, but the Knight with the stag is surrounded by an air of mystery that makes such an assumption seem far too convenient and mundane.
In any case, the truth will only be known to the warrior himself—and to whoever wins his allegiance. Wounded honor is the reason for this secrecy, but the Knight of the Stag has more reasons than others to abandon his lineage. Far from being a simple wandering paladin, he was once the younger brother of King Guarin, nicknamed "the Bloody" by the scholars of Teleria.
Although his innate talent allowed the Knight of the Stag—the Grand Duke of the time—to master the arts of war with ease, he had little interest in the ideals of chivalry. Spoiled by wealth and sheltered from the misfortunes of the world, he spent his youth jousting, hunting, and feasting with his peers.
It was in hunting that he excelled most, and his massive expeditions often led groups of young nobles into the forests for weeks at a time, allowing them to pursue the most exquisite game the royal lands had to offer. It was during this time that some of his closest comrades gave him the nickname "Knight of the Stag" and that he learned the ropes of command and strategy.
But the young duke was so absorbed in his petty pleasures that the truth about his brother's reign escaped him for years. Meanwhile, King Guarin became increasingly paranoid and violent, his exorbitant taxes bled the peasants and citizens dry, and his constant fear of a coup led to the imprisonment and even execution of a number of influential nobles.
In the end, it was Guarin's own uncle who led the rebellion. The Knight of the Stag, unaware of the truth, joined his brother as honor demanded and fought the rebels on numerous occasions. His talent as a strategist proved decisive in securing key victories for Guarin's armies and helped defeat the rebellion after a year of bloody fighting.
But victory is not enough for the mad king, who personally devises horrific forms of interrogation and execution for the nobles involved in the failed uprising. Guarin's cruelty is such that even his brother begins to realize how low he has sunk. Alas, after attempting to reason with Guarin, the Knight of the Stag is accused of high treason and thrown into the dungeons of Kaerok Castle, where he awaits execution alongside his uncle.
But the bloody spectacle planned by Guarin was never to take place, for other forces were at work. The night before the last rebels were to be put to death, something strange happened in the dungeons. All the sentries guarding the prisoners' cells collapsed in an instant, still alive but plunged into a deep sleep.
Before the stag knight realized what was happening, a woman of cold, supernatural beauty, clad in shining armor, appeared before him. Knowing that she was the Arbiter—a herald chosen by Lumaya herself—the knight fell to his knees in respect. But the Arbiter had no use for veneration; she was looking for a champion to right the wrongs inflicted upon the kingdom of Kaerok.
She asked the Knight of the Stag to rise and revealed that his brother, King Guarin, had unwittingly served the Dark One's purposes by weakening Kaerok and allowing insidious cults to spread throughout the land. She promised the Stag Knight a chance to redeem himself in exchange for his service as Champion of Lumaya.
The Knight accepted without hesitation. In a flash of arcane energy, he was transported to Guarin's throne room—his weapons and armor were returned to him by the will of the Arbiter. The bewildered royal guard fell under the blows of the Knight of the Stag's halberd, and, though it pained him greatly, he incapacitated Guarin before other guards could arrive in the commotion.
In the days that followed, news of the king's death spread through Kaerok like wildfire. Celebrations took place in most of the larger villages, the uncle of the late king was released from prison and installed as the new monarch—it is said that his reign marked the beginning of a new golden age for the people of Kaerok.
The Knight with the Deer, meanwhile, was not there to see Kaerok return to normal life. His duty accomplished, he had solemnly set aside his name and his former life to devote himself to Lumaya's cause.
The duty that the Arbiter had for him remained a secret, but the Norr tribes who dared to venture into the Winterlands often spoke of a warrior clad in the purest white armor in the centuries that followed. They did not know who this warrior was or what his purpose was. But legend has it that seeing the stranger's silver woods and sumptuous azure cloak in the blizzard is a good sign for those with pure intentions—and the doom of those who carry darkness in their hearts.
