History of Alice la Flâneuse

Alice was placed in the care of the Sacred Order at the beginning of her adolescence. Alice was one of many daughters in a poor, minor noble family with no apparent heir, so her parents separated from her to avoid having to find her a husband, to whom they would then have to pay a dowry. Unable to afford the attention of suitors of quality, they saw the Order as a place where Alice would be safe, but also far from the sons of insignificant families.

Even though they had made this decision with good intentions, Alice resented them for it. Her faith in Lumaya was strong, but she had no particular love for the Order. Once there, her assertive nature, independent spirit, and curiosity led her to rebel, and she was frequently punished for refusing to obey instructions and asking inappropriate questions.

The only comforts Alice found in the Order were the many libraries of the Eternal Citadel and her combat lessons. The former satisfied and nourished her desire to learn more about the world. Her combat training allowed her to vent her anger and prepared her for all the thrilling dangers of Teleria when she could, one day, venture out and discover them.

One of the many places Alice learned about was Durham Forest. Vast, impenetrable, filled with bizarre and ferocious monsters and predators, it was a land of wonders in her eyes. She dreamed of seeing it.

What was the best way to see the world? How could she make the most of her talents? How could she live a truly fulfilling life? These were questions Alice asked herself every day. A life tied to churches and chapels bored her. The discipline and regimented lifestyle of a soldier would restrict her.

She wanted to travel, learn, investigate. She chose to become an inquisitor. That decision changed her life in ways she could never have imagined. It set her on a path that led to the pursuit of the Queen of Hearts, a member of the Revenant Knights, whom she had never heard of before.

It began when Alice questioned a K'Leth cultist with a red tattoo on the palm of his hand. His enigmatic answers to her questions led her to books, which led her to cultists, which led her to more books. She dug deeper when she stumbled upon familiar family and place names in stories about the dark nobility of Kaerok, incidents involving murder and exile, and discovered family trees in decrepit, dust-covered tomes found in forgotten, spider-infested mansions and archives. Alice wept tears of rage when the connections finally clicked into place.

The Queen of Hearts was once set to become the Queen of Kaerok, but she was cast aside a few days before her wedding to the then-prince regent. She was involved in the destruction or ruin of many of the descendants of the man who was to be her husband, as well as members of her queen's family. One of these families was that of Alice, who was eventually banished from court and dispossessed of large tracts of her ancestral lands.

Alice vowed that day to destroy the Queen of Hearts, and she devoted herself for several years to eradicating the Cultists of K'Leth and their master Revenant Knights. She burned nest after nest and gave work to executioners throughout Kaerok, but her scarlet prey eluded her.

At least, until she captured White Rabbit, a crude and uncouth Demon Spawn who served the Queen of Hearts for reasons known only to himself. Alice assumed it was out of pure selfishness. He proved her right. After a quick and embarrassing interrogation, during which the leporid Demon Spawn bit and kicked, swore and spat, then defecated, he revealed that the Queen was carrying out a plan to seize the crown of Kaerok that had been denied her so many years before.

She was heading for Durham Forest to ally herself with, or steal from, the insect lords who lived in its heart. Alice's heart began to pound with excitement. Finally. She had never lost her fascination with the forest or her desire to go there. This was her chance.

Knowing, thanks to her work to eliminate the Queen of Hearts, that Durham Forest had played a key role in the story of the dark origins of the Cult of K'Leth made her journey into its dark depths even more appealing. Alice had no idea what to expect, which only made the adventure all the more exciting. Durham was only a few weeks' walk to the north, and Alice set off immediately, her fluffy, long-eared prisoner strapped to her back.
