History of Senna Cœur d'ambre
Senna of the Celestial Iron Territory was an unparalleled dreamer and thinker during the Grey Age. Her vast intellect set her apart from the average Dwarf, and she felt a certain pity and disdain for those around her, for none understood the laws of runic writing and science as she did. Her peers, for their part, were alienated by her incomprehensible theories on matter and its underlying structures, and her tendency to ignore the basic day-to-day maintenance of her body when she was absorbed in her research.
His work narrowed in scope and progressed rapidly after a dwarf explorer from the upper world returned with a sample of amber from the ancient rainforests of Torcelin Istriv, which Senna purchased and analyzed. The sample contained a small insect captured inside, stuck in a state of stasis.
Senna had previously theorized about the preservation of living things in solid matrices, and found that nature had already done this: could the process be made reversible? She placed an order with the explorer, asking him to bring back as much amber as possible.
Senna invented several modes of preserving and restoring living tissue based on the application of runes to amber, such as binding sap to wounds and transmuting the gooey liquid so that it married with flesh, healing wounds without leaving any trace of damage or treatment. Although this was a remarkable development, Dwarves had other methods of healing with magic, and Senna was looking for something unique: blocking living flesh in temporal stasis, enhancing the amber that had preserved an insect body from decomposition, but at the cost of the animal's life. She wished to satisfy her insatiable intellectual curiosity by transporting herself to the distant future, hoping to emerge into a world enlightened by formidably advanced magic and technology, where the average Dwarf could be as brilliant as she was.
She accumulated enough amber to fuse it into a lump big enough to hold her, on which she engraved paradoxical runes of life and timelessness, designed to dissipate slowly over many centuries before releasing its occupant. Senna was her first guinea pig, and she set the runic counters for two thousand years. Missing few people, and hidden behind protective spells, traps and illusions in her laboratory, she was undisturbed as time passed.
If nothing had intervened, Senna would still be sleeping there today. But someone did: the Arbiter. For despite Senna's genius, she, unlike the Arbiter, had no access to the Waters of Life and no intimate insight into the process of death and soul transfer that took place there.
The Arbiter thought she could modify and interrupt this process to preserve a being, body and soul, in a tiny space, enabling her to preserve exceptional heroes from the ravages of old age, but also to contain terrible threats. Although wise and powerful, the Arbiter was unable to create the soul receptacles she had theorized, lacking the time and ability to devote the necessary effort while the disastrous consequences of the Dragons' Sin continued to reveal themselves. She had heard the rumors of Senna's experiments and sought out the Dwarf.
The Arbiter dispelled Senna's illusions and runes, before gently releasing the Dwarf, infuriating Senna. She praised Senna's talents and asked for help in repeating her results. The Dwarf chafed at the interruption and spoke of her people's disdain for divine beings.
But the Arbiter was not easily dissuaded. She asked Senna to accompany her to see the urgency of her request. Senna felt the Arbiter's radiance of glory and solemnity, like gentle sunbeams warming his skin and wetting his eyes. But for all her majesty, the Arbiter seemed fearful. Concerned and curious, Senna yielded.
The Arbiter led them through the skies of Teleria at phenomenal speed. Senna saw the infernal Sulfur Gate and the annihilation of the Empire of Dragon Descendants, which had been powerful in her day. She realized that if she hadn't been freed prematurely, she could have woken up in the middle of a nightmare into which Teleria had fallen while she was locked up and powerless. Even a chance to fight futilely would be better than being passive.
Senna also realized that her esoteric mastery and theorizing were meaningless without practical uses. Remembering her healing with amber, and seeing the terrible suffering produced by the invasion of the Demonic Rejects, she not only helped the Arbiter create Shards, but also crafted a staff topped with amber to amplify her healing techniques, with which she saved many lives during the First Great War.
When the war ended, Senna asked the Arbiter to place her in a Shard so that she could witness a bright future. She has in fact witnessed many futures, having been released many times over the centuries to care for important people and marvel at the progress made in the world. And yet, Senna still asks to return to the Shard, believing that Teleria still has much to do to meet her exacting standards.
