History of Valet de Coeur
The Queen of Hearts had no idea of the origins of the man she later condemned as "Valet". She didn't care. He was one of the hundreds of K'Leth Cultists who served her. Surely, she thought later, when he was one of her most loyal courtiers and formidable warriors, he had been attracted by her beauty, her bewitching demeanor, and her intoxicating wit and power.
The truth was, the Valet was a survivor. He was one of the countless Anhelt orphans who had fled the brutal nuns of the Church of Lumaya orphanage. He heard about the Cult of K'Leth in the streets of Amoc and learned that it promised much more than the Church: immortality in this life, something that could easily tempt a boy who had often seen death in his short existence.
This desire drove the Valet to endure the brutalities of the Cult, which, he soon discovered, were similar to those of the Church. Hardened by his past experience, with the help of tricks and his fists, he pulled himself up from the bottom of the hierarchy to reach a lower middle rank. With an ounce of power and knowledge of how the Cult worked, he knew he had to find someone among the Revenant Knights to attach himself to, someone on the rise who had allies among the Shepherds of Souls, if he was to live forever. After years of unrewarded toil, the Valet met one who called herself the Queen of Hearts.
She was arrogant, boorish and ambitious. A combination of self-confidence and irresistible beauty had enabled her to gather a large following in a short space of time, and she was fabulously wealthy. The Queen was an unusual character in that she was indifferent to the wishes of the other Knights. Her bad temper was renowned and her impulsiveness led her to give incredible rewards and terrible punishments. If he played his cards right, thought the Jack, he could be rewarded with a great prize.
He did it for years. The rewards came. Rank. Prestige. Quality armor. Superb weapons. The Valet found his Queen's ability to irritate other Revenant Knights entertaining, especially those who had scorned his desire for immortality.
When she blessed him with a soul gem and a new host body for his essence, his commitment to her was cemented. Here was a woman who recognized his work and his loyalty. Whatever she was plotting, he vowed, he would carry it out as she wished.
He did so until the Queen declared to her court that she intended to negotiate an alliance with the Insect Lords of Durham or, if that failed, to steal them. She would obtain their power and knowledge, and use them to seize the throne of Kaerok.
The Valet was appalled. Like most people, he didn't know much about the Insect Lords. That was the problem. It was impossible to predict their actions. If they possessed the power rumored, even he, the Queen and her bizarre sorcerer's helper, the Mad Hatter, would be no match, he said. The Queen, falling to her knees on the chessboard-patterned floor of the Queen's court, begging her to reconsider.
He longed for her to become Queen, but this was not the way to go about it. It was too dangerous. They'd destroy everything she'd built, and if his faithful service meant anything to her, she'd certainly listen to what he had to say. The Queen dismissed him by rolling her eyes, calling him "razor" and laughing in his face. The whole court joined in. The Valet was resourceful enough to curtsy before leaving, his face flushed with shame. The next day, he sent a letter to Durham Forest by scarlet warbler.
The Mad Hatter, mad enough to be called mad, sane enough to know what he was doing, caught the Jack in the act. The latter was dragged before the Queen. She declared him a "Jack" for his "treason" and had his head cut off on the spot. His body and war gear were then thrown out of the court in a large heap.
That night, a tide of scorpions, beetles, spiders and centipedes emerged from a nearby wood to approach the Valet's stinking remains. They carried his body, his head and his war gear. For several days, they traveled to the heart of Durham Forest, presenting their gift to their masters.
The Insect Lords rebuilt the Valet. They sewed his head back onto his body with a life-giving web braid. They attached to his breastplate an enormous heart-shaped jewel, made from the solidified and blessed venom of death-track scorpions, fire asps and tiger-web spiders, mixed with the enchanted secretions of death caps, which kept his heart beating. Adopting the name the Queen had given him, they declared him Valet de Coeur, so that he would be a thorn in the Queen's side forever, until death claimed her. He enjoyed a truly independent immortality.
