History of Ba Satha
Ba Satha was born in the large Drake breeding pens of the City of Dreams in the Lakes of Chagrin, and his childhood with his pack was rich in pleasures. Trained to be both sturdy beasts of burden and fierce beasts of war, Ba Satha and his fellows were well treated by their Lizardmen trainers, and their bond was very strong.
Ba Satha would do anything to protect his masters and friends, and they would do the same for him. The start of the Gaelic War destroyed this idyllic life, as he and his comrades were thrown into the bloody conflict. Trainers and diehards were slaughtered by the steel of the Telerian League, and Ba Satha survived battle after battle by sheer luck.
During a terrible confrontation, while defending his master, Ba Satha was hit by a sledgehammer and knocked unconscious. Hours later, he regained consciousness and discovered he was alone, in the middle of a field of corpses. He stood up, wept for his friends and wandered through the mud, bodies and blood, hoping that at least one of his broodmates or trainers was still alive.
He found no one: only the cruel Revenant Knights and their flesh-gatherers, scouring the battlefields for fresh bodies to use in their rituals. Ba Satha was exhausted and terrorized. He was easily captured.
After being shackled and dragged to a hidden outpost in the Desolate Lands of Windstorm, Ba Satha was subjected to a hideous treatment. He was injected with concoctions, tortured with nightmarish equipment and forced to eat the flesh of his fellow creatures. His suffering seemed endless.
Yet Ba Satha kept calling his friends, hoping that someone would finally come to take him home. Thinking they'd finally broken his spirit, Ba Satha's torturers carried out an act that would have been barbaric even for other Revenant Knights, had they known about it.
They implanted a soul into the Drake's tired form, hoping that it would give up its body. But this wasn't just any soul: the Revenants Chevaliers had captured a Demonic Reject and were curious to know what effect it would have on Ba Satha's tortured being.
Ba Satha writhed in pain and screamed as his soul and that of the Demonic Reject battled for control. As they fought, their bodies metamorphosed, transforming Ba Satha into a half-Demon, half-Drake monstrosity. His indistinct howls became guttural sobs, his cries for help tearing the eardrums of those watching this hellish experience.
To the surprise of Ba Satha's captors, neither soul dominated the other. On the contrary, the two merged, uniting behind the same profound desire: a creature totally unique in the world, endowed with the strength of a Drake and the magic and cunning of a Demonic Reject. As his agony finally subsided and he adjusted to his new form, Ba Satha raised his hindquarters and attacked his captors.
The Revenant Knights didn't flee far enough.
Emerging from his prison, Ba Satha was torn as to which direction to take. He knew that other Demonic Rejects lurked in the desolate Vent-Tempête Lands, but did not know how he would be received. Instead, he headed north to the Lakes of Sorrow, since the part of Ba Satha that remained a Drake hoped to find friends and safety there.
Across dry fields, dusty deserts and decrepit fords, Ba Satha advanced, hobbling past ravaged supply convoys, dilapidated field hospitals and piles of the dead. He used his Demon Reject powers to give himself strength, burning with magic to keep moving.
The part that was once a Demonic Reject couldn't help thinking of the horror that might await him, but the Drake in Ba Satha wanted to return home so badly that there was no turning back.
When Ba Satha finally arrived, he didn't find his friends. He didn't find his enemies. All he found was a smoking ruin, an ocean of bodies and little pockets of Gaellens poking around in it all; the remains of the once-great City of Dreams.
Ba Satha dragged himself to what remained of his birth pen and sat down in the rubble. He let out a heart-rending cry, hoping that some, at least one, of his brood mates or master would emerge. But no one came. Even the Gaellens in the ruins were too sad, too downcast at the sight of the destroyed city, to come to him.
Exhausted, bruised and battered, Ba Satha let his body collapse. He closed his eyes in the hope of peaceful dreams. It wasn't to be, but he woke up determined not to give up, and so he headed for the vast Lakes of Sorrow in search of the family the Drake had lost. How long this would take, or how long the Demonic Reject would tolerate this quest, he didn't know.
