The story of Cleopterix
Cleopterix began his life in the Krokhan Desert among the ranks of a band of highwaymen, the Ergkarakk, who operated from several camps between the Dead Lands and Khrokhan itself. In these treacherous wastelands, it was easy for them to conceal a variety of hiding places.
From there, the Ergkarakk would raid the slow-moving merchant caravans along the time-worn trade routes of central Peltas. During skirmishes against the caravan guards, Cleopterix perfected the arts of combat, spears and hast weapons being his preferred weapons.
From her Ergkarrak comrades, she learned the honor of thieves, and the habits and customs of a family of outlaws: fairness to her brothers and sisters in banditry, icy silence in the face of all outsiders, and violent resistance to the forces of law, order and tyranny.
From the desert and the wastelands, she learned the lessons of the relentless trials presented by nature. Her mentors said the hawk was the model of a bandit because the predatory birds they often saw hunting struck from the sky with speed and grace.
Cleopterix accumulated influence and prestige from his victories, and believed that a place on the Ergkarakk leadership council would surely be his. But his rapid ascent caused jealousy among the more established members of his band.
Together, they accepted that if changes in leadership were to take place, Cleopterix and her followers would never be suitable power-holders. Their reasoning was fallacious and Cleopterix's merits undeniable, but it was the will of the old guard to make an example of her, a warning to those tempted to disrupt the order of things.
And so they fell into a trap. The Ergkarakk patriarchs heard of a powerful Dwarf merchant prince who hated the band and planned to split it up to weaken it. Seeing a chance to get rid of Cleopterix by keeping an alibi, the band's leaders made a deal with the Dwarf behind his back.
Cleopterix and his loyal raiders were sent to intercept a caravan that looked like any other. Shortly after the attack began, an elite, hidden heavy infantry force of battle-hardened Humans, Orcs and Dwarves emerged from the wagons. After an intense battle, Cleopterix was the only survivor, having fled deep into unfamiliar canyons.
Wounded and without provisions, Cleopterix felt death closing in on her as a day and a night passed in those desolate chasms. Hunger and thirst weakened her, and hawks and buzzards circled overhead. She cursed her fate and her betrayal, again and again, wishing she could strangle the stupid old Ergkarakk leaders who had done this to her because she now realized her folly.
Weak though she was, she found the strength she needed to break the long, wiry strokes of a handful of vultures that approached her. She didn't eat their flesh, because she knew that eating it raw would make her sick. For three days, Cleopterix lay in a cul-de-sac between death and the scavenging birds.
The stunted vultures had learned that even if Cleopterix was dying, it was still too dangerous to approach her. Then a hawk swooped down among the vultures, unaware of what they knew, and approached her.
The stories tell how, when Cleopterix drank the hawk's blood, a wild and furious power rushed into her and confronted her being, fighting for dominance demanding a place. She cried out to the heavens, and the buzzards scattered in a huge cloud, bawling in panic at what had just been created.
Because she was now a Skinwalker, a hybrid of raptor and human, and when she regained full control of her body and senses, she discovered she'd been given a new chance at life. Whether it turns out to be a life of bloody vengeance or a journey along a new and different path is a question whose answer is being created as we speak.
