Soul Reapers
History of Dreng La Tombe
The origins of the Revenant Knights are shrouded in mystery and myth, but the ruined city of Narbuk remains a sacred place of pilgrimage for members of the cult. The necropolis that lies beneath the ruins is home to hundreds of years of history, long before the Revenant Knights took on their true name.
But this necropolis jealously guards its secrets. There are hidden passageways and chambers carved into the tunnels that most Knight Revenant pilgrims are familiar with. Sanctuaries and laboratories, libraries and stores of secret knowledge. These places are often traveled, well mapped, and kept away from the noisy undead. But there are deeper chambers, passages that go deep underground, locked behind doors no one has opened in living memory.
There could be anything down there. Some have ventured out. None came back… except one. Dreng La Tombe.
That's the name we gave it, anyway. The walking grave does not speak. The imposing carcass walks the paths of the catacombs of Narbuk with the only mark of its passage being the dull sound of its armored steps. Nobody knows where he comes from. No one knows where he is going or what he is doing. Brave lunatics have followed him for a time, and if they are wise enough to turn back when he reaches one of the doors to the lower chambers, they may even report what they see: the doors and portals all open for him. But if some dare to follow him, they never come back.
All this would be quite mysterious, but Dreng La Tombe is not always alone. He is often seen carrying a shriveled figure strapped across his back. This silhouette is anything but silent, even if it doesn't have much to say. She screams, squirms and writhes, but her restraint keeps her firmly in her luxurious chair. A prisoner. Maybe. No one is sure. No one knows if it's still the same person.
It is said that those who disappear into the deep chambers are chained to Dreng's chair, until he can consume their souls to power his magical blades. It is also said that the Walking Tomb was placed there to protect the secrets of Narbuk, from the Knightly Revenants – both guardian and punishment – but that is all speculation. The Elders of the Cult do not speak of the Walking Tomb, nor of the creature it carries. Pilgrims who visit Narbuk know very well not to approach it. But should the Sacred Order or any other group of heroes attempt to attack the depths of Narbuk, the Revenant Knights know their secrets will be well protected…and their enemies will suffer for their transgressions.
