Countless horrors lurk in Teleria. Many are the legends of monsters and evil spirits whispered by terrified mortals. As winter approaches and the days grow shorter, these tales become more frequent, for the night of all ungodly things is upon us. But even today, when frightening fables abound, few dare speak of Elegaius, for his name alone strikes fear into the hearts of heroes and peasants alike.
This is a legend that dates back millennia, long before the Stormwind Wastes earned their name. In those halcyon days, it was a fertile plain, home to many fledgling kingdoms where wealthy rulers sought to outdo one another in splendor.
Among them, an Archon had decreed that he was the most pious of all his rivals and had ordered the construction of a Temple of Lumaya, the likes of which Teleria had never seen. It was a gigantic undertaking that depleted the public treasury and nearly caused a revolt when exorbitant taxes were imposed on citizens, but slowly, construction began to take shape.
Alas, blinded by his pride, the ambitious archon did not see the corruption that was already poisoning his court. Elegaius, the high priestess of Lumaya, had long since lost her faith in the goddess and fallen under the influence of evil. The necromancers in Siroth's service opened her eyes and taught her the ways of ancient black magic, which would allow Elegaius to obtain power beyond her wildest dreams.
And so she made a terrible pact that would condemn the entire city. While construction of the great cathedral of Lumaya continued, Elegaius committed countless atrocities in secret. She performed bloody rituals, sacrificed innocents within the walls, and desecrated relics, while her supposed ruler feasted and boasted of his religious fervor.
The wheels were in motion, and no one could prevent his plans from coming to fruition. Finally, the day came when the temple was completed, its beauty so great that it brought tears to the eyes of adults. Proud of his achievements, the Archon called for a mass that would bring him the blessings of Lumaya. The entire city gathered, filling the temple and the outer square with a crowd of a thousand people who fell silent in respectful silence when the high priestess addressed them and called for prayer.
That was when the horror began. The psalms of love and light changed, becoming more and more vicious with each verse, until not a single soul in the congregation could understand the language in which Elegaius was chanting. No one could move a muscle, hypnotized by the strange incantation.
Suddenly, a black steel dagger sprang from beneath the priestess's robe. She plunged it into her own heart, offering a final sacrifice to the Dark One, but death did not claim her. With a cry of agony, Elegaius's body writhed, aging decades until it began to rot like a bloated corpse.
A shockwave of arcane energy burst forth from the dagger she held in her hands, turning people into withered husks as their souls were drained. Within a minute, all that remained was the creature that had been Elegaius—an entire city gone, transformed into a terrible monument to Siroth's dark glory.
But nothing lasts forever under the moon, and the weight of time has long since reduced the once-proud city to ruins. Those who venture into this cursed desert speak of tortured cries echoing between the broken walls of the temple that was once the envy of all Teleria.
Legends say that the high priestess Elegaius still resides there, feeding on all those foolish enough to enter her domain and patiently awaiting the arrival of her master's legions in the world. Woe betide those who cross her path, for she is a monster of ancient power. Even the mightiest champions will be sorely tested when facing such an enemy.
