History of Falmond Lamedeuil
Falmond Lamedeuil, legendary marshal of the Sacred Order, was a hero of the Telarian League during the Gaelian War. Sullen, taciturn, and moody, Lamedeuil was renowned not for his considerable military prowess or superb combat skills, but for his unwavering will. His determination was ironclad, and his faith was unshakeable.
Falmond first rose to prominence as commander of the defense of the Lands of the Renaissance. With the Order's armies elsewhere, the defense of the region fell to penitent workers, retired veterans, and aspiring clergy, whom Falmond mobilized to fight again and again against armies of elite Gaellens. Even as he fought, he heard whispers that the true architect of the assaults was not the Gaellen Pact, but someone or something else.
Nevertheless, Falmond had no time to pursue these rumors. Losses were mounting, and he was struggling to maintain the unity of his army, which was dwindling as the war continued. Wherever defenders faltered or the enemy threatened to invade, the marshal appeared, urging the faithful on. No matter how often they repelled one assault, another would follow. Even the most steadfast defenders feared defeat was inevitable—all except Falmond, whose resolve hardened with every battle.
To bolster the fighting spirit of his exhausted soldiers, Falmond had the blades of the fallen men reforged into a single weapon: an ultimate sword, so that he and the other survivors would remember and persevere in the name of the glorious faithful who had died. He thus earned the nickname «Lamedeuil» (Blade of Mourning), and it was with this grim weapon that he led the final defense of the Lands of Rebirth.
The Army of the Unprepared, as it became known, retreated to a narrow pass near the Eternal Citadel, outnumbered five to one. The battle lasted several days, with the Order's troops slowly retreating.
The Pact army believed victory was inevitable and charged ahead, unaware that it was being lured within range of the Citadel's outer defenses, where hidden artillery units and wounded troops armed with crossbows were stationed. They only fired when the Gaellens were a hundred paces from the ramparts. They could not miss their target. Thousands were killed in a matter of minutes. The Order's losses were monstrous, but they won the battle.
For this victory, Falmond Lamedeuil is remembered as a saint, and the members of the Order, who seek to follow his example in all they do, hold him in high esteem. His face adorns busts and tapestries, and his statue stands silently guard above the entrance to the Eternal Citadel.
His story is told on the anniversary of the final defense of the Lands of the Renaissance, and the apprentices of the Order learn it in its entirety. It represents the pinnacle of everything a warrior of the Sacred Order can and must be. But Lamedeuil's story does not end with the Gaelian War.
Once victory over the Gaellens had been secured, Falmond was freed from the burden of immediate duty and was finally able to pursue the truth hidden behind the whispers he had heard during the war: that the attacks on the Lands of Rebirth had not been the work of the Gaellen Pact alone, but also of another group.
Falmond questioned survivors and prisoners, studied ancient texts and stories forbidden to all but the most privileged, and slowly came to discover the true nature of his adversary. A being who sowed discord wherever he roamed, bringing only confusion and pain.
For months, Falmond searched for the creature he came to know as Karnage the Anarch, a Demon Spawn who cared only for chaos. Although his superiors in the Sacred Order initially doubted the creature's existence, Falmond convinced them through his stubborn persistence.
He led expeditions into the Red Peak Mountains and the snow-covered lands of Frostheim, then into the swamps of Peltas, following a trail of broken communities and betrayals. Wherever he went, he discovered new evidence of his enemy, as well as survivors of the creature's machinations, and his determination to destroy it grew stronger.
Finally, he arrived at the ancient ruins of Roshad, on the edge of the Krokhan Desert, where he finally encountered his adversary. There, the Anarch subjected Lamedeuil and his followers to a terrible spiritual spell that forced them to relive the battles of the Gaelian War over and over again, without respite. Falmond stood firm and broke the spell's control through sheer force of will and his absolute hatred for this enemy. Karnage escaped before the commander of the Sacred Order could take his revenge, but not before hundreds of Lumayan soldiers, under the spell's influence, killed each other in terrifying rampages. Falmond himself was mortally wounded.
Falmond's body was never found. A survivor claimed that as Lamedeuil lay dying, leaning against a broken and bloodied statue of Lumaya, a strange figure, glowing with a sacred light, appeared and knelt beside him. When the figure rose, Falmond Lamedeuil had disappeared.
