History of Fatalis the Epeist
The Black Being Frizen had never really known the company of animals. He had never known his mother, either because he was a separate parent who called the animals he hunted and foraged for food his sons, or because he ventured into the darkest forest during a hunt and never returned.
Frizen continued to learn from the creatures of Durham Forest, studying their behavior. Thanks to them, he learned to hunt in the undergrowth, climb the highest trees and silently swoop down on his prey. By the time he reached adulthood, he was more beast than person, in tune with the chaotic rhythms of Durham.
Frizen wasn't wild at all, however. He traded with the caravans that traversed the Durham confines, exchanging solid carcasses of teeth and bones about the creatures of the forest for food and hunting implements. Tales of the lone "Elf-beast", with his ragged sack of animal parts and long sword slung over his back, spread along the roads and trails winding through Durham.
Many years after his father's death, Frizen noticed that the creatures of the forest were worried. Many of them had strayed from their usual stomping grounds, displaced by something.
He noticed myriads of footprints going deeper into the forest, all fleeing an intrusive terror that left much larger marks. It was the discovery of a beast he'd never seen before in one of his traps that confirmed his suspicions.
It was a small cat-like creature, dressed in a garb that resembled that of a human hunter. As Frizen freed him from his net, the cat remarked on the expert construction of the trap, explaining that it was something he'd never seen in his world.
Confused, but also intrigued by this talking feline, Frizen warned him not to linger too long in the forest. Not only were his creatures confused and ready to defend themselves, but any Ranger worth his salt would have this cat for sale in a menagerie of other fantastic beasts before nightfall.
The cat said the troubles in the forest were the reason he'd ventured so far. He formally declared himself to be a Palico, the assistant of an otherworldly hunter who was on the trail of one of the most formidable monsters of his world, the dreaded Doom. He told Frizen the legends surrounding this black, winged beast, including how it had once brought about the fate of a kingdom in a single night. From his bag, the Palico drew sketches of the monster and behavioral notes from legends and folklore, and claimed that if not eliminated quickly, it could cause monumental destruction.
As chaotic as the forest was, it's a stable chaos. If left to roam freely, a beast the size and power of Doom would undoubtedly upset Durham's delicate balance, drawing even primitive monsters from the heart of the forest. If that happened, no one would be safe. Frizen accepted Palico's help and encouraged him back to his camp to work out a strategy.
They worked for hours, exchanging tactics and making sure they were prepared for any eventuality. With their hearts pounding, Frizen and his new companion began to follow the trail of the Fatalis, hoping that it had not yet incurred the wrath of Durham's ancient masters.
Fortunately for the two hunters, the Fatalis had ceased its incursion into the depths of the forest, settling in a castle that disguised its ruins at the edge of the woods. There, it stood above crumbling parapets and turrets, its imposing aura weighing heavily on the surrounding air. The hunters entered the remains of the castle courtyard, now the monster's domain. Taking a deep breath, Frizen drew his blade and stared at the Fatalis. The latter's eyes pierced him to the core. It seemed to stir, before spreading its wings and roaring. The ground shook, and the building cracked and collapsed. Frizen did not flinch, but instead approached the beast, his knuckles white around the hilt of his sword.
It is said that the battle lasted all night, and reports from a nearby canopy city mentioned huge jets of flame shooting out of the castle's highest turret. More fantastical storytellers claimed to have seen a Dark Elf briefly riding a black dragon with his blade raised, before seeing the two plunge toward the ground in a dangerous dive. The only constant is that an exhausted Dark Elf finally emerged from the castle, beaten and broken, but accompanied, according to some accounts, by a bipedal cat wearing clothes.
Frizen returned to his duties as a hunter, but he no longer carried his worn bag or long sword. He was now clad in armor as black as night, wielding a monstrous two-handed blade that could split the skin of even the toughest rockworm with a single strike. Stories about the beast-elf quickly faded from memory, and all that remained were tales of Frizen of the Black Scale.
