There is arguably no more famous and beloved tavern in the whole dwarf kingdom than the Stout Oak Inn, which sits comfortably a few blocks from the capital's main square. And Maulie Tankard, the ever-cheerful bartender whose smile dazzles even the gruffest dwarf, has been instrumental in maintaining the reputation of her beloved establishment. Indeed, it is difficult to find such a cheerful and optimistic young girl. Maulie knows when to serve the beer and tell a story that will make the customers laugh, and when to drag them into a good old tavern brawl. But when the dust settles and the broken furniture is thrown out, everyone resumes drinking, singing and praising their hostess. Life would have continued at the same joyous pace if not for the demonic invasion of his homeland. For a time, the Stout Oak had gone silent, no songs were sung within its walls, no competitions or drinking games took place. Instead, the dark soldiers of the King's Guard took refuge inside. When the demons attacked them, using their wings or dark magic to break through the city walls, the inn was also stormed. It was then that Maulie Tankard showed courage. When a monstrous hound knocks down the captain of the guard and nearly rips his throat out with its jaws, it's Maulie who saves his life. Grabbing a huge fork – one of the sausages she was cooking still impaled on the teeth – she charged at the beast and brought it down with one precise blow. Emboldened by his example, the dwarf warriors counterattacked and repelled the demons. Once the siege was lifted, the captain found Maulie and presented her with a masterwork hammer – one of the oldest symbols of dwarven warriors – commissioned in the image of that fateful pitchfork. Though purely symbolic, the hammer was a mighty weapon, and Maulie would have no other when the lure of adventure finally dragged her from her tavern to the surface. Where some seek fame and wealth, Maulie Tankard wants nothing more than good stories to tell when she returns, and new recipes to spoil her regulars.
