Story of Rian the Illusionist
Many magicians rely on the forces of nature, channeling them through arcane means to achieve their set goals. They make rain and lightning fall, set their allies' swords ablaze or even destroy their enemies with acid hail - all impressive displays of magic for the uninitiated.
If Rian the conjurer is to be believed, it's more like a light and mirror show, or a children's game with forces they can't understand. It's an arrogant claim, but one she can back up with immense power and knowledge.
Once a sorceress in the service of a cruel dark elf warlord, Rian has always been an ambitious woman. She wasn't content to serve someone else, bowing to a so-called king whose reign would surely end with a stab to her black heart.
No, this arrangement was not meant to last, and Rian took advantage of her position to acquire all the wealth and knowledge she could by manipulating her hapless protector. When the time came, she provoked the warlord's assassination and fled into the chaos of the ensuing infighting.
With her freedom assured, Rian scoured the kingdoms of Teleria in search of ancient relics and powerful mages from whom she could learn... or steal. She sought out exiled Aravian scholars, shamans from Orc and barbarian tribes, eager to steal their secrets. She studied all the arcane techniques they had to offer until she mastered the element of fire and could conjure an inferno with a snap of her fingers.
Rian then travelled to the city of Narbuk and made a pact with the Necromancers who had long lived within its ancient walls. There she learned the dark secrets of soul magic and the rituals that would enable her to bring the dead back to life.
But Rian wouldn't be herself if she didn't perfect these arcane techniques, ensuring that her spells went far beyond the simple reanimation of dead flesh. But this was not enough. Rian sought greater heights of mastery, and devised a daring plan that enabled her to enter Kaerok's royal court.
For years, she forged a false identity to conceal her evil deeds. When the time came, she presented herself as the apprentice of a deceased High Elf mage and sought the good graces of the king's archmage, Hellmut.
This was no easy task, for Hellmut was a cunning man, well-versed in experience and constant intrigue. It took all Rian's cunning to gain access to the Archmage's tower. There she found ancient tomes that spoke of the creation of artificial life - servants born of stone, fire and metal to do the magician's bidding - and a scepter of power that increased the flow of a person's innate magical talent.
Alas, Hellmut caught her in the act and a terrible battle ensued between them. The tower's stone walls cracked and wood splintered, priceless books burned and the sky itself blackened in a storm of arcane energy as the two clashed. Hellmut had proved stronger in the end, but Rian would not die easily.
When all seemed decided, she used the knowledge in Hellmut's tomes to conjure up a flaming golem that protected her from the Archmage's wrath. Once again, she escaped while Hellmut struggled against his creation, disappearing into thin air and evading all the pursuits that the King's banner lords sent in search of her.
No one knows where Rian the Conjurer is today, but an elven woman matching her description was spotted, albeit dressed in gaudy robes. Those lucky enough to survive the encounter also spoke of an obsidian glass dagger she carried, shrouded in dark magic, and whose mere presence awakened a primal terror in the hearts of the unprepared.
It is said that two living stone creatures sometimes accompany him: one is a fiery beast of raw rage, the other a horrible construct of tortured souls imprisoned in an artificial body. No one can say what these creatures are or what sacrifices Rian had to make to create them.
But one thing's for sure: she's more powerful today than she's ever been, and summoners seeking her services should beware. Who knows what treachery she's capable of?
