History of Skartorsis
There was a time when Skartorsis was not one of the greatest necromancers of the modern age, but a simple, incompetent and destitute sorcerer, selling simple elixirs and meaningless spells to the gullible inhabitants of the peasant villages he passed through. Those days are long gone and, as Skartorsis wishes, will be forgotten by all but him.
Forgotten, too, will be the fact that during his wanderings, Skartorsis discovered an ancestral book of necromantic magic in a grave he was using for shelter one night, during a violent storm. The sorcerer dared to utter one of the incantations in the book and accidentally unleashed a swarm of undead on the surrounding villages.
Most second-rate necromancers led short, miserable lives, quickly falling victim to one of their own spells, a rival practitioner of the unholy arts, enraged villagers or roving inquisitors. But Skartorsis was one of the lucky ones, or was aided by an even greater and darker power.
He managed to escape the embrace of the dead he'd awakened by accident, then to trap one and learn the correct spells to force it to obey him. Making other people his puppets was attractive to someone like Skartorsis, who had spent his younger years so oppressed, and he discovered that he possessed a natural aptitude for necromancy. It wasn't long before he was summoning the more distant dead to unleash them on unsuspecting hamlets and see what they would do.
His skills didn't go unnoticed for long, whether by the forces of light or darkness. A witch-hunter from the Church of Lumaya tracked him down and would have killed him had it not been for the timely arrival of Necrotos, a famous practitioner of black magic who was then working in Anhelt. Skartorsis accepted the offer of an impromptu alliance and, together, they killed the witch hunter. After the battle, Skartorsis agreed to become Necrotos' apprentice.
Necrotos guided Skartorsis for many years, until he finally went too far. Skartorsis managed to seize the Crown of the Empty Tomb from the forehead of an undead ruler named Moresh. Necrotos demanded that Skartorsis hand over the crown, but Skartorsis refused. A titanic battle ensued, one that tore through the night and drove the dead from their graves for miles around. In the end, Skartorsis was victorious.
As befits a sorcerer seeking to cheat death, Skartorsis didn't kill Necrotos or banish his soul. Instead, he cut off his head and cast a whole host of curses on the skinned skull, forcing it to forever babble his secrets to Skartorsis, while acting as a center for his own dark magic. Between the skull of Necrotos and the Crown of the Empty Tomb, Skartorsis had the tools to become one of Teleria's most feared characters.
All these events took place centuries ago, and Skartorsis lived up to his ambitions. The days of a meager existence as a mortal manipulator are long gone. He is now able to raise armies of undead minions, blast his opponents with glistening green energies of death or make them take decades in a fraction of a second.
In addition to a legion of skeletal warriors, rebellious spirits, striking spirits and cruel shadows follow him wherever he goes. To those who know him, it seems that Skartorsis has mastered death, that he has reached a higher plane of reality. Certainly, Skartorsis himself, confident in his arrogance and backed by the whispers of Necrotos, believes the same thing. What he hasn't realized is that Necrotos isn't totally subservient to him. Over time, the old necromancer hopes to regain his body and control over his former apprentice.
Skartorsis' skills are much sought-after by other Undead, and he is prized not only as an unrivalled necromancer, but also as an advisor and ally. On the battlefield, Skartorsis' magic can spell doom for an opponent or success for a friend. His skills, aided by Necrotos' reluctant, grating chants and the concentrating power of his crown, are more than equal to almost any sorcery trickery his enemies could employ.
But SKartorsis demands a high price for any alliance, and even powerful vampires and skeletal warlords have found themselves on their knees to pay homage to the great necromancer. Some of the restless spirits and ghosts that constantly surround him even whisper that Skartorsis hopes one day to become the greatest of all Undead, uniting all lost spirits and wandering souls in a final cataclysmic death spell that will allow him to break the last fetters of existence and transcend into an eternal deity. Perhaps this supposed ambition will bear fruit, or perhaps in the end, Necrotos' supposed knowledge will ultimately lead his perfidious pupil to destruction.
