History of Sombre Kael
Millennia have passed since the great schism that tore apart the elven race. Entire generations have distorted history to suit their political needs, and the truth has long been lost, replaced by the hatred and resentment that the two fractured elven kingdoms harbor for one another.
For many, this hatred is all there is. This is not the case for Kael, whose sharp mind has always sought the truth, no matter how many layers of lies he had to pierce through. As an apprentice sorcerer, Kael had access to some of the greatest reservoirs of knowledge that still remained in the realm of the Dark Elves.
And unlike his peers, he had both the desire and the patience to pore over ancient history manuscripts that did not directly aid his magical prowess. It was an interest he could pursue seriously after reaching adulthood and becoming a fully-fledged magician.
Kael had undertaken numerous solo expeditions into the ancient ruins of Durham Forest and beyond, where relics of his people's past still lay untouched. Over time, he earned the cautious respect of powerful Dark Elves, though Kael's lack of vicious hatred for their Araven cousins stifled his chances of gaining a position in the courts of the Highborn.
This suited Kael perfectly, even though he still wanted to seize every opportunity to expand his knowledge. It was a quest that would ultimately make him an outcast among his own people and lead him into the service of the Arbiter. But as Siroth's forces gather and hope dwindles across Teleria, Kael once again considers turning to the darkest magics his people have practiced for centuries.
He does not do this to serve evil, but to turn his own weapon against him. Alas, countless ambitious heroes have sought to do the same. Their excessive pride and lack of understanding were a path to damnation that Kael is in no hurry to take.
No, he needs something that can help him control the infernal energies without being consumed by them. And so his eyes turn to the Tower of Destiny. There, in the bowels of the ancient arcane prison that the Arbiter had created for some of Teleria's worst abominations, lie the mysteries of ages past.
Let's suppose that Kael manages to complete this perilous journey to the top of the Tower and seize the occult artifacts scattered throughout its secret passages. In that case, he will finally be able to tap into the sources of black magic and unleash his full potential against the creatures of the Shadow without being subject to the will of Siroth himself.
