Tatsu's Story
When Tatsu was a child, his family was caught up in a hunt for dissidents by Mikage troops. To teach his village the importance of loyalty, the soldiers executed everyone they captured, including all other members of Tatsu's family. Tatsu learned his lesson well.
Tatsu was transferred to a state orphanage, where the Mikage quickly noticed her fighting skills. They brought her to the palace of her local warlord, where she joined the ranks of the palace guard. She quickly climbed the ranks of the hierarchy, accepting the tattoos that designated her as a high captain, and came to train other soldiers in the same way she had once done. She never doubted her path. For her, the only path to safety lay at the feet of the Mikage.
After several decades in the service of her warlord, Tatsu was taken to a secret ritual chamber beneath his palace, where her warlord and his magistrates announced that she was ready to join the Mikage. There was no room for doubt or hesitation. She had to participate in this ritual or die for her disloyalty. Tatsu knelt before her lord.
Demonic blood and black magic were injected into her veins, infusing her blood with incredible strength, arcane power and relentless agony. Her screams echoed throughout the palace and, in the end, it was all for nothing: she was powerful, immortal... and blind. According to her masters, she was too weak for the ritual. He had rendered her useless, and they were rid of her.
Tatsu spent the next ten years working in the garden of her warlord's palace, ignored. For a long time, it was a torment - only the useful were safe, she thought. Over the years, however, her fear gave way to acceptance, then curiosity, as she realized how little consideration and attention her masters gave her. She listened to the reckless words of Mikage lords and henchmen, and learned the truth.
There was a massive Shadowkin rebellion against the Mikage autocracy. It had been going on for nearly a century... and it was winning. The palace guard had expanded because Tatsu's warlord feared for his life. She had been enlisted to ensure her loyalty, because the Mikage feared betrayal at every turn. Her family had died because even small dissenting peasants posed a threat.
The Mikage weren't invincible. They were weak, and they were dying... and Tatsu could help them die faster, for while she had lost her eyes, she was no longer blind. A decade spent in darkness had pushed Tatsu to master her remaining senses. After many years, she was shocked to find that her demonic magic helped her to perceive her surroundings, giving her second sight. When she finally mastered it, she wept, thanking Lumaya for the first time since her childhood. She began training in secret, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
The moment came when Tatsu's master received all the local warlords for a meeting. That night, she retrieved her ancient swords, attacked the palace and promptly killed the guards. She had trained them herself and knew their every weakness. The Mikage lords were defenseless and showed their true colors.
They fell at Tatsu's feet, begging her to spare them, promising her all their power and luxury. All their talk of strength and loyalty was just a mask - in truth, they were governed only by greed and fear. Their death was swift. The fall of the rest of the Mikage autocracy took less than a decade.
Once the Shadowkin had regained their freedom, tough decisions had to be made. Many of the heroes of the rebellion were deemed too violent or unpredictable for the new regime, and over time were forced into exile or even assassinated.
It was the same for Tatsu. For fifteen years, she lived as a free Yakai, but these years were marked by increasing isolation and fear of those around her. When a noble guest arrived at her home and gently suggested that she leave the kingdom, she wasn't surprised, or even irritated. She had been allowed to stay longer than most other demon-affected people. She left that very evening.
Exile was no relief from persecution - the world beyond the Nyresian Union was not ready to see the Shadowkin as anything other than the servants of Siroth they once were. When she reached the free city of Arnoc, she was identified by her tattoos as a servant of the Mikage and thrown into prison, left to fend for herself.
Little did her guards know that she was immortal and patient - she'd spent ten years as a blind gardener, and could wait at least that long to regain her freedom. Tatsu was hiding her time when a new prisoner was placed in the cell next to hers, a Lizard-Man painter called Jizoh. All it took was one sketch on the wall of Jizoh's cell to change the course of Tatsu's eternal life - forever.
