History of Vergumkaar
Although many consider Vergumkaar to be nothing more than a beast of burden—however exotic it may be—it would be foolish to underestimate the intelligence that lies beneath this magnificent mass. Indeed, he may not be able to speak, but like the mighty dragons to which he is related, Vergumkaar is fully conscious and possesses wisdom acquired over centuries—one need only open one's eyes to see it.
Its origins lie in the northeast, where the remains of a once-great civilization dot the jungle beyond Godfrey's Crossing. It was there that Vergumkaar was born, the last descendant of an ancient caste of Dragonkin warriors. Once shaped by lizard-men priests, these noble defenders regressed to a semi-bestial state over the millennia of neglect and savagery that followed the fall of their people's empire.
Vergumkaar was not alone when he hatched into the unforgiving world of Teleria. A tribe of his distant ancestors, primitive and bound to traditions they no longer understood, worshipped him as a demigod; they catered to his every whim and ensured that the drakeling grew into a powerful and robust creature.
Hundreds of years passed in generous happiness, but it could not last forever. Slowly, the tribe died out and Vergumkaar remained alone amid the ruins. He stayed there for years, hunting, defending the crumbling walls of the temple against intruders and treasure hunters.
Time had begun to take its toll, and Vergumkaar soon realized that his mind was slipping, his sensitivity weakening, giving way to blind instincts. It would take a momentous encounter to pull the old drake out of this quagmire.
One day, a bold barbarian warrior named Ursuga ventured into the jungle infested with lizardmen in search of wealth and glory. She had overcome many challenges during her adventures and was not deterred by an ancient drake blocking her path. It was a daunting challenge!
And for Vergumkaar, he was just another intruder defiling his lands. And so they fought. Three dawns and three sunsets passed, witnessing the heroic clash between the barbarian and the dragon, until both collapsed from exhaustion. During this time, Ursuga realized that she was not facing a mere beast, and she had gained a new respect for her opponent—as had Vergumkaar.
Seeing the intelligence in the drake's eyes, Ursuga chose to communicate rather than attack once more, and to her surprise, the creature proved more than capable of understanding her. With nothing really holding him back, Vergumkaar chose to follow the strange human, strengthening the bond they had forged by testing their strength against each other.
Together, they traveled many roads and overcame many dangers. Tales of Ursuga's glory multiplied, and Vergumkaar remained by his side, his stoic determination balancing the barbarian's turbulent and impatient temperament. Neither the haughty high elves of Aravia nor the dark-hearted apostates wandering the abandoned crypts of the Stormwind Lands could prevent the duo from venturing into their domains.
The riches they earned and the enemies they defeated contributed to the illustrious reputation of Ursuga and Vergumkaar. Even today, patrons of Aravian taverns love to recount the strange adventures of a barbarian from the East and her faithful dragon steed, whose amber eyes burn with fierce intelligence and whose scaly body bears the fruits of countless successful endeavors. If you ever encounter this mountain of a woman and her saurian friend, you would do well to show them the respect they deserve: it is better to have them as allies than as enemies.
