History of Yakarl the Scourge
Clad in armor adorned with black steel, gold, and frost, Yakarl advances into the hurricane of battle like an ice giant from the myths of ancient Norr. He is himself a living legend, a champion from the days when Norr raiders crossed the ocean and struck terror into the hearts of all who had the misfortune to catch their rapacious eye. The runes tattooed on his body and carved into the beard of his axe still shine with the vicious glory of that era, but today he serves a higher power.
Even as a young warrior, Yakarl was renowned for his strength, courage, and luck. He made a name for himself during daring raids on the coast of Aravia, razing and pillaging small villages before fleeing with rich spoils before the elven forces could gather to retaliate.
He earned the respect of his fellow warriors and soon led a small band on even more daring ventures that took him from the stormy Valdemar Strait to the rocky shores of Kaerok. Tales of Yakarl's exploits spread, and his wealth grew over the years, as did his authority among the Norr. But this was not enough to satisfy his thirst for fame.
He desired nothing less than to become a chieftain whose name would be acclaimed above all others. So when an old skald passed through his lands singing songs about an ancient weapon forged by Brimir himself, Yakarl took notice. He welcomed the stranger with honor, summoning a feast in a display of ostentatious hospitality. At the height of the festivities, when all his guests were drunk on mead and ale, Yakarl swore to travel north and find the legendary Allwinter Axe in a quest that would be celebrated forever.
He equipped eight ships to set sail, his bravest warriors at his side. Some advised Yakarl to abandon this crazy dream, or at least to wait until next year—winter was approaching, and the treacherous waters of the North Sea would soon become virtually impassable. But the chief remained adamant. He would not renounce his oath, even in the face of grave danger, for that would bring him dishonor he could not bear.
And so it was that the ships left the steep harbor of Yakarl within a fortnight. They sailed through storms and blizzards, fighting for their lives against both nature and the vicious monsters that inhabited the North. One by one, Yakarl's ships were lost, sunk, or overrun, but he stayed the course.
Even when the twinkling lights of dawn shone in the sky and Yakarl's ship was the only one left standing, he refused to turn back. But with his crew dwindling, he too began to lose hope. Too weak to fight his way through the frozen waters, his choice was simple: succeed or die trying. But even in those darkest hours, Yakarl's luck did not fail him.
On Christmas Eve, Yakarl stood alone at the bow of his ship, reflecting on the cruelties of fate and the depth of his pride. The freezing cold held him immobile more surely than any chain forged by mortal hands, and death seemed almost certain. It was then that Yakarl heard a chime of bells that seemed to permeate his very mind. It was a strange sound, which made him think he had finally gone mad.
In reality, this chime announced the arrival of their savior. To his great surprise, Yakarl saw the old skald who had told him the legend of the Axe, but this skald was now riding a sleigh that rose above the water, no longer dressed in rags but in shining armor and a coat vibrating with crimson and white.
It was none other than Sir Nicholas himself who came to see the brave sailors who had traveled this distance and faced countless dangers. He addressed Yakarl in a voice that boomed like thunder and brandished Allwinter's axe, the very one that had driven Chief Norr into the jaws of death.
It would come back to him, Nicholas proclaimed, for few possessed the will and determination necessary to survive in these inhospitable lands. But there was a catch. Yakarl had to swear to devote his life to the goddess Lumaya and fight as her champion against the forces of darkness that threatened Teleria. In doing so, according to the old warrior, he would gain glory and fame beyond his wildest dreams.
In a way, it was a dream come true. To wield a weapon of ancient power, to fight eternally against worthy foes, and to be hailed as a hero by mortals throughout the mortal realms? Yakarl accepted without hesitation, and in a flash of blinding light, Sir Nicholas bound his soul to one of the shards given by Lumaya.
Thus imbued with the goddess's power and with his prize in hand, Yakarl brought the survivors home. There, he divided his riches among them and chose a worthy successor to rule in his place. Once his duty to his people was fulfilled, Yakarl set off again for the North, where his new eternal life awaited him.
