25 years old: Mario's real age?

In a 2005 interview, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto indicated that the legendary Nintendo character would have between 24 and 25 years old. He added nothing more, simply stating that apart from his age and profession, nothing had been defined regarding the character of Mario and his personal life.

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario is around 20 years old! However, the debate remains open among fans. Some remain skeptical, believing that Mario looks much older than that. For these fans, Nintendo's plumber is about thirtyor even a forty years.

What about Luigi's age compared to Mario's?

Both in the games and in the Super Mario Bros movie (released in 2023), Luigi is presented as Mario's little brother. But did you know that in the official Nintendo universe, the character is actually the Mario's twin ? And although Mario is still the eldest, Luigi would also have between 24 and 25 years old.

However, some theories continue to support the idea that Luigi is one year younger than Mario: so, if Nintendo's famous plumber is between 24 and 25 years old, his little brother would be between 23 and 24 years old.

How old is Mario as a franchise?

As a video game franchise, Mario's age should delight fans who argue that Nintendo's famous mascot is in his forties. Indeed, the very first time Mario appeared in a video game was in July 9, 1981, which would give him 44 years old in 2025! This is the video game Donkey Kong, where Mario was still called Jumpman.
