Where do smileys come from?

According to the story, the smiley came from an American named Harvey Ball, who invented it around 1963 to boost morale among the team working for him at his company in the USA.

Four years later, another American known as David Stern, owner of a Seattle-based advertising agency, also claimed to have been the source of the smiley. Neither Harvey nor David ever thought of protecting the image, and it was brought to public attention around 1970 by Bernard Spain and Murray Spain in an advertising campaign in New York City.

In 1971, the smiley was created by a Frenchman named Franklin Loufrani to launch an advertising campaign for his own company. In 1996, Franklin Loufrani's son Nicolas Loufrani succeeded him and further developed the smiley by adding several expressions to it. Since then, the smiley has been recognized and used the world over.
