Which Internet service allows your browser to find the IP address corresponding to bipm.org?
The proposed exercise asks you to identify the Internet service which allows you to correspondence between a domain name (bipm.org) and its IP address.
What is DNS?
the DNS Where Domain Name System is an essential Internet system. It is used to translate domain names readable by humans (e.g. bipm.org, google.com, pix.fr) by IP addresses (e.g. 192.134.4.10) that computers use to communicate with each other.

Imagine that DNS works like a telephone directory:
- You type a website name in your browser (example: pix.fr)
- DNS is looking forassociated IP address (example: 145.239.37.162)
- Thanks to this IP, your computer knows which server to connect to in order to display the desired page.
Without DNS, you'd have to remember and manually type in the series of numbers corresponding to IP addresses to access websites. This would complicate every connection to a site.
What is an IP address?
A IP address (Internet Protocol) is a unique identifier assigned to each device connected to a network, such as the Internet. It enables computers, smartphones, servers and others from communicate between them via a connection.
The IP address works a bit like the postal address of a home:
- It enablessend and of receive information.
- It indicates where a device is located in the network.
- It guarantees that data arrive at the right place.

There are two types of IP address:
- IPv4 as 192.134.4.10
