History of Le Calamitus

The story of this dark spirit known as Calamitus is horrific and abominable. Fashioned from the slaughtered remains of hundreds of battlefields, he's a hideous amalgam of doomed souls, bound and captive in a shell of dead meat. He's dressed in graveyard livery, sports the iconography of death and wields a pair of cruel scythes, their blades engraved with ominous seals that ooze evil miasma. But he also has another, more grotesque form... that of an earnest spectre, wrapped in ragged garments and crowned with grave-iron. Either way, he's a terrifying embodiment of death itself.

The Calamitus was created by Losan K'Leth to be an immortal soul hunter and a relentless collector of fresh physical receptacles for his Cult. The ritual used in its creation cost the lives of hundreds of K'Leth's most loyal servants when their dark souls were used to stimulate the psychological monstrosity they had helped shape. K'Leth had discovered the method for creating and binding such an entity during his studies of ancient tales and cruel esoteric experiments, and was eager to see if such a thing could really be accomplished.

Storms raged for days, pounding the isolated cemetery of the Windstorm Wastelands, which the necromancer had chosen as the ideal site to perform the rites necessary to attract the death energies that permeated the region. Slowly, painfully, the Calamitus amalgamated into a cocoon of graveyard mud and bloody burial shrouds, each soul making it more powerful, until at last it was strong enough to emerge from this ghastly womb and kneel before its creator.
Even if some of K'Leth's disciples grumbled at the price they had to pay, he felt the end result was worth it.

The determination that drove him and the objectives he fulfilled were those of K'Leth. Calamitus was nothing more than a grotesque tool of the Cult's founder. He would send it out to scour the territory for receptacles, and when he found them, he would remove their spirits from their bodies. Calamitus struck at army encampments, bandit hideouts, isolated farms, harvest festivals and even ships at sea, wherever he could obtain several souls at once. He had no subtlety, no caution. He was an elemental force, directed by his master at potential targets and unleashed to accomplish his grim task.

It then greedily consumed the plaintive souls it had chosen, using them to feed itself and leaving empty shells, ready to be reclaimed by members of the Cult. This situation continued for some time, but K'Leth's creation of this entity had not gone unnoticed. Indeed, the mystical ripples caused by his invention resonated even as far away as Anathraad, where Siroth noticed them and observed them, distractedly at first, then with keener interest.

Finally, he decided to act to wrest control of the Calamitus for himself. Whether this act was motivated purely by hostility or because Siroth thought the Calamitus might be useful for his own machinations is a matter of conjecture among the few members of the Cult of K'Leth who knew the truth of what ensued. Whatever the case, Siroth stretched his mind and sought to usurp K'Leth's control over the entity. K'Leth, recognizing the threat, resisted, albeit more out of pride and anger than any real hope of success. And just then, when the attention of each of his two aspiring masters was focused on the other... the Calamitus escaped.

The days that followed were filled with horrors defying all imagination. The mad, aimless Calamitus rampaged through Peltas without reason or cause. Where he went, death followed. Even the servants of the Cult were not immune to his frenzy, and more than one secret sanctuary and repository of soul gems was transformed into a mausoleum as Calamitus devoured every soul in it, both those with bodies and those without.

Calamitus' fury soon attracted the attention of a Lightbearer known as Gariel, one of those who had chosen exile in the wilds of the world after the Red Crusade. Gariel set out to kill the entity before it could do any more harm. Finding it was not difficult, and soon Gariel, with his wings of iron and his spear of celestial flames, swooped down on its quarry in the wilds of the Krokhan Desert. There were no witnesses to the ensuing conflict. Some Nomad tribes speak of a night rich with thunder and flames in the clouds, but beyond that, no one saw the battle.

In the end, however, Gariel no longer existed, and Calamitus had become something far worse. It flew away on new wings, wearing Gariel's blackened ragged clothes and uttering a hungry cry that echoed in the soul of every living being in Peltas, as well as in Siroth's mind. Following the cry to its source, he struck and took control of the raging monstrosity, bending it to his will as K'Leth felt his defeat.

In those first moments, Siroth studied his new servant with a curious eye, for Calamitus had changed enormously, not only in form, but also in hunger... he longed for another soul identical to that of Gariel. So much so, in fact, that he looked greedily at his Demonic Rejects, who for their part had no desire to get close to such an abomination.

Siroth was delighted, as the Calamitus could prove to be the answer to his eternal impasse with Lumaya's servants.

And if not, well, he was going to make sure he was, at the very least, well fed...
