History of Cheshire Cat
According to the priests of the Church of Lumaya and the warrior bishops of the Sacred Order, every Demon Spawn is a depraved worshipper of Siroth. This is not true. Some have turned against him over the centuries: disappointed by the defeats suffered in the Great Wars, tired of the political maneuvering and hellish brutality of Anathraad, or simply dreaming of a peaceful life.
As for the Cheshire Cat, also known as Khessyrkit, he abandoned Siroth following the Second Great War. Every inch of Teleria was covered in blood after this terrible conflict.
The flesh of the bodies feeds the scavengers for months and the earth for a generation. Entire forests had grown on some battlefields, their roots twisting around the skeletons of the dead, some of which still writhe and twitch with Death-life today.
The Cat had been Siroth's subordinate for many centuries when he decided to abandon him. It had been a long time coming, and many of Siroth's Firstborn had expected this betrayal much sooner, for even before the Great Divorce, the feline Khessyrkit was known for his fickleness and his unreliable smile.
He was a creature of mischievous melancholy, who played with mortals and immortals alike for what seemed to be his own amusement, before growing tired of them without warning. Many other Firstborn of the Shadow God noted that Khessyrkit did not do much in the way of fighting. He was able to vanish at will, seemingly appearing and disappearing from existence.
Walls were no barrier to him, and when he decided to join the battles, he clawed to death many Dwarves who thought themselves safe. However, his powers did not protect him from the fate of banishment. Like the other Firstborn who fought for Siroth, he was cast out to Anathraad and became a Demon.
He was trapped. There was little for the Cat to do in Anathraad except play with lesser demons. To protect himself from others, he traded information: his ability to become invisible and teleport, as well as his lack of allegiance to anyone except Siroth and himself, made him an ideal spy for hire. Everything changed with the Sin of the Dragons and Siroth's discovery of a way for his Demons to return to Teleria by implanting their souls into a Telerian body.
Sin had led to the imprisonment of thousands of Dragon Descendant soldiers in Anathraad, and all of them were used as hosts by the Demons, including the Cat. His feline essence mingled with the reptilian form of the Dragon Descendant's body, which he took over, resulting in the creation of a Demonic Spawn that resembled a spiked tiger-lizard. He retained his characteristic elusive grin.
Between his transformation into a Demon Spawn and his abandonment of Siroth's cause, the Cheshire Cat traveled dozens of times from Teleria to Anathraad. His paws turned scarlet, drenched in the blood of Dwarves during the fall of their sub-empire, as he teleported at will from one sealed chamber to another. The nomadic hunters of the Krokhan Desert lived in fear of the «Blue-Scaled Tiger» that hunted so many of their kind.
He was the scourge of mortals and Lightbearers during the Second Great War, but Siroth's ultimate defeat only annoyed and frustrated him. He never returned to Anathraad. He was well known enough to be hunted by the Lightbearers, who were less easily fooled by his invisibility and able to anticipate where he would teleport next. The Cat fled to Durham Forest to escape them. There he encountered beings who were even more difficult to deceive.
The Insect Lords could have killed him, but they did not. They sensed his annoyance with Siroth and felt no love for the God of Shadows themselves. They also understood the value of having a Demon Spawn as a servant, especially one as stealthy and cunning as the Cat.
They introduced themselves to him, emphasizing the need to thwart Siroth's plans, telling him more about their nature than they had told anyone before in order to gain his trust, and offering to serve him, with the possibility of carrying out his tasks as he saw fit and the freedom to go wherever he wanted when he had no mission. The Cat accepted: the Insect Lords were powerful creatures, endowed with a cunning he greatly respected, and like them, he did not want to see the fall of Teleria.
Centuries later, the Insect Lords ordered the Cheshire Cat to recover the knowledge and treasures that the Queen of Hearts had stolen. It was they who led him to Alice the Wanderer. An ally in the Sacred Order could provide them with a wealth of useful information, and they could not leave the forest, so intertwined were their souls with it. Khessyrkit, for his part, saw this task as excellent entertainment. The Queen's impulsiveness and the Mad Hatter's insanity created a combination that no one could find boring.
