History of Baerdal Marteaucruel

Once upon a time, there was Baerdal Fellhammer, a brave and turbulent warrior, always looking for a good fight to prove himself. He may have been small, but only a fool would underestimate the strength of a dwarf. And, much to Baerdal's delight, the taverns of Teleria had no shortage of fools. So he fought, drank, gambled away everything he had won, and enjoyed his carefree life.

None of this would last. One of Baerdal's forays into the forgotten crypts ended in disaster. The ancient floors collapsed beneath his feet, and the dwarf warrior found himself in catacombs far older than the tomb he was exploring. Baerdal had to fight for his life for days, assailed on all sides by skeletal ghouls and malevolent specters, until he finally found his way out.

This desperate battle, without rest or respite, had changed Fellhammer, and where a boisterous and joyful fighter had entered the tomb in search of glory, a paranoid and cautious survivor emerged from its catacombs and ventured into the sinister forest of Durham. But it was not all in vain. Thanks to his courage and the strength of his axe, Baerdal slew many impure creatures and fought his way to a clearing where a strange light seemed to keep the undead at bay.

Tired and wounded, Baerdal collapsed at the edge of a pond whose water was as black as pure obsidian. He dreamed of spirits gathering and dancing around him, warding off the evil that would see him dead. When he awoke, Baerdal Fellhammer realized that the Fey—the guardian spirits of Durham—had given him a small part of their power.

Whether for his bravery or simply because they were compelled to, their protection has remained with him to this day. *The story of this champion was adapted from Murd's contest submission.
