History of Caoilte Flèchecendre
Many centuries ago, before his terrible downfall, Caoilte, Earl of the Summer Oaks, reigned in a pristine grove covered by a dense canopy. His courtiers, whether Elves or Fairies, admired his firm and benevolent leadership.
He avoided conflict, content to charm the trees so that they would grow and their roots would sink deep. His domain was close to the Heart Tree and enjoyed its proximity to the source of the Rhythm. Caoilte had no idea that deep within this Tree lay the Seed of Corruption, planted long ago, waiting for the opportunity to sprout and mature.
When one of the servants of the Dark God awakened him, the effects on the Sylvans were devastating. In a matter of moments, most of the ardent defenders of the Heart Tree went mad, and the Rhythm was shaken by evil whispers and dark compulsions.
Corruption spread from there, transforming the beasts of the Mistwood into material for the creation of monstrous hybrids, and the Elves and Fae into agents of the Darkness, insane and lobotomized. Caoilte, living near the Tree and visiting its glorified branches at that moment, was among the first to be affected.
Corruption resembled a flame within his oak-like body, and he began to resemble a tree struck by lightning with its trunk on fire. Caoilte resisted with all his will and broke away from the degenerate Rhythm. But this only slowed his decline. As his mind frayed, he desperately ordered his servants and subordinates to flee.
A few lucky ones did so. Many others hesitated, only to be consumed by Corruption. And still others, such as his court steward, Ingid, were already enslaved by the Darkness, lacking the formidable mental defenses of the Fae.
As the conquered members of his fallen house scattered to spread Corruption like a virus, Caoilte attempted to go into exile so as not to spread more suffering. As Corruption fought to take control of his body, he felt his strength surge in bursts like a raging fire, and each time, Caoilte lost control of his actions.
During those hours or minutes of total degeneration, he slaughtered entire bastion trees of Elves with volleys of poisoned arrows made of corrupted ash wood. He sounded his horn, which once heralded the arrival of summer and a period of great joy and abundance.
When relieved and joyful Sylvains responded, expecting to receive help from the fairy being, he slaughtered or corrupted them. Later, Caoilte's horrified spirit regained control of his body, devastated by what he had done. He realized that there was only one way to truly counteract his own recurring atrocities.
Caoilte reached the coast and commandeered a boat. He sailed swiftly across the waters and arrived near one of the many isolated islands off the eastern coast of the Misty Woods. He beached the boat and burned it to ashes with the fire of his own grief.
Moments later, an ominous red glow burst from his eyes and mouth, and his formidable spirit finally succumbed to the relentless onslaught of Corruption. He was a castaway, far from his homeland and completely isolated from those whom he knew he would have harmed had he remained.
Enraged by his imprisonment, the corrupt Caoilte poured his darkness into the island's vines and plants, causing them to twist, contract, and crave corpses for fertilizer. The coral turned blood red, and the reefs teemed with voracious fish with sharp teeth. Insects grew monstrously large, and the birds and lizards that once hunted them transformed into horrors of bone claws and muscle.
But Caoilte's new malevolent personality was incapable of devising a plan to escape. His makeshift rafts were repeatedly destroyed by waves and storms, even when he tied the bloated bodies of corrupted animals together with thorny vines and grew blistering plants to aid their buoyancy.
The efforts that the corrupted character Caoilte made during these attempts exhausted his power enough to leave a crack in his mental grip. His former self rose up and tried to restrain the raging Corruption, launching an internal struggle that continues to this day.
Over the centuries, many explorers noticed the island of Caoilte, with its strange trees and unhealthy red-orange vines, and attempted to land there. None managed to explore it and survive. Some fell ill as soon as they set foot on it. The mere proximity of Caoilte is enough to overwhelm a mortal's body with its evil corruption.
He slaughtered others with volleys of his poisonous ash arrows. He was merciless toward those he sensed were greedy and evil, whatever twisted standards remained in his confused mind. Intruders he deemed «innocent,» Caoilte drove away, terrified, sounding plaintive, shrill blasts on his once-resounding horn.
These few survivors say that he speaks only in poetry and lamentations, singing elegies for himself, a Duke of Summer living in a land of perpetual autumn corruption. A true decline.
