History of Cillian the Lucky
The lands of Teleria never lack for champions, even if not all of them fit the idealized stories of rugged heroes or fearsome villains. Just as some warriors forge their legends in battle through unmatched skill, others find themselves in the spotlight through sheer luck.
Here is one such story. Sir Cillian was never blessed with impressive stature or particular grace. He was, as he is today, corpulent and cheerful, far more interested in the next feast than in glory on the battlefield.
As a page in the service of Sir Fadrique—an exalted knight of Kaerok—Cillian was the least gifted student of all the martial arts. He was clumsy with a sword, couldn't hit a target with a bow if it was more than ten paces away, and could barely ride a horse without falling backwards.
He was ridiculed by his peers and mercilessly reprimanded by his tutors, though no amount of punishment could awaken talents that simply did not exist. One fateful day, Cillian's impressive display of ineptitude made him the target of the lord's wrath, and he was forced to flee the castle.
He sought to hide in the woods surrounding Fadrique's ancestral estate and, true to his nature, lost his way a few minutes after entering the forest thicket. Unlucky, he wandered the overgrown paths for hours and hours, before coming upon a hidden clearing.
From this clearing came pure, clear voices singing joyful songs of happiness. Mesmerized by this beautiful music, Cillian headed toward the clearing, and what he saw there would change his life forever.
The forest faeries danced around a mighty oak tree growing in the middle of the clearing, dressed in bright colors, their voices joining together to praise the rebirth of nature that spring brought. Cillian stood transfixed, watching the jubilant spirits for what seemed like an eternity before drowsiness overtook him and he fell into a deep sleep.
When he awoke, the faeries had vanished as if they had never existed, and at first Cillian thought he had been dreaming. But as he stood up, something slipped from his chest and fell to the ground. The young page bent down and discovered a four-leaf clover so bright green that it immediately stood out from the fresh grass covering the forest floor.
Not wanting to miss his chance, he picked up the leaf and quickly walked away from the clearing. From that day on, everything Cillian did was blessed with strange good fortune. He found his way home without stumbling once, and in the days that followed, he passed all the tests he had previously failed.
His opponents stumbled and fell, his arrows found their mark, even though his technique was laughable, and he was eventually lucky enough to be knighted. As a knight of Kaerok, Sir Cillian won many jousts when his rivals' horses veered off course or inexplicably reared up a second before his lance dislodged their riders, to the joyful applause of the crowd watching him.
Similarly, many enemies have met a most undignified end, such as Xensor the Sinister—an infamous necromancer—who tripped over his own cloak and threw himself from the top of his tower moments before casting a deadly spell on Sir Cillian. Or the orc chieftain Arzhak the Bloodthirsty, whose band of marauders terrorized an entire duchy for years, only to fall victim to a swarm of angry hornets when Sir Cillian accidentally knocked their nest onto Arzhak's head.
Of course, commoners care little about the force that ensures their hero's success, and over the years, Cillian's story has grown and spread far and wide. Even today, he remains a beloved and famous knight, whose exploits are overshadowed only by his love of beer and song.
