History of Cillian the Lucky (Cillian the Lucky)
The lands of Teleria are never short of Champions, though not all of them fit the idealized stories of hardy heroes or fearsome villains. Just as some warriors forge their legend in battle through unparalleled skill, others find themselves in the limelight by sheer luck. Here is one of those stories. Sir Cillian was never endowed with impressive stature or special grace. He was, as he is now, portly and cheerful, far more interested in the next feast than in glory on the battlefield. As a page in the service of Sir Fadrique – an exalted knight of Kaerok – Cillian was the least gifted student of all martial arts. He was clumsy with a sword, couldn't hit a target with a bow if it was placed more than ten paces from him, and could barely ride a horse without falling backwards. He was ridiculed by his peers and reprimanded mercilessly by his tutors, though no amount of beating could awaken talents that simply did not exist. One fateful day, Cillian's impressive display of ineptitude made him the target of the lord's ire and he was forced to flee the castle. He sought to hide in the woods that surrounded the ancestral domain of Fadrique and, true to his nature, got lost a few minutes after entering the thickets of the forest. Unlucky, he wandered the overgrown paths for hours and hours, before coming across a hidden clearing. From this clearing escaped pure and clear voices which sang joyfully songs of joy. Hypnotized by this beautiful music, Cillian walked towards the clearing, and what he saw there would change his life forever. The fae of the forest danced around a mighty oak tree growing in the middle of the clearing, dressed in bright colors, and their voices united in praise of the rebirth of nature that spring brought. Cillian, stunned, froze in place, watching the jubilant spirits for what seemed like an eternity before a drowsiness overtook him and he fell into a deep sleep. When he awoke, the fae had disappeared as if they had never existed and, at first, Cillian thought he had been dreaming. But as he stood up, something slipped from his chest and fell to the floor. The young page bent down and discovered a four-leaf clover so brightly green that it immediately stood out against the fresh grass that covered the forest floor. Not wanting to miss his chance, he picked up the leaf and quickly walked away from the clearing. From that day on, everything Cillian did was blessed with strange fortune. He found his way home without tripping once, and in the days that followed, he managed to pass every test he had failed before. His opponents stumbled and fell, his arrows found their target, though his technique was laughable, and he was finally blessed with the rank of knight. As a knight of Kaerok, Sir Cillian won many jousts when his rivals' horses veered off course or reared inexplicably on their haunches a second before his spear dislodged their rider, to the cheering applause of the watching crowd. Likewise, many enemies met a most undignified end, such as Xensor the Sinister - an infamous necromancer - who tripped over his own cloak and threw himself from the top of his tower moments before casting a lethal spell on Sir Cillian. Or the orc leader Arzhak the Bloodthirsty, whose band of raiders terrorized an entire duchy for years, and who fell victim to a swarm of angry hornets when Sir Cillian accidentally dislodged their nest on Arzhak's head. Of course, the commoners care little about the strength that ensures their hero's success, and over the years Cillian's story has grown and spread far and wide. Even today, he remains a beloved and famous knight, whose exploits are eclipsed only by his love of beer and song.
