History of Eostrid chant-rêve
When pollen and petals float in the wind, when animals emerge from their dens with their newborns, when the light of dawn returns as winter's grip loosens, it is the season of Eostrid Dream-song, the fairy spirit of young shoots and promising rebirth. A crown of vines and flowers rests upon her brow, and her staff glows with a golden light that soothes and relaxes the minds of mortals.
Children adore her because she is their friend and confidante, and unlike adults, they never doubt her word. Parents love her too, because she helps maintain discipline: the threat of not being allowed to participate in Eostrid festivities and games is a powerful bargaining chip.
Eostrid is the messenger of spring. She does not personally cause plants to bloom, snow to melt, or the sun to rise earlier, but as she winds her way along the paths around the Mistwood, she seems to encourage the process to unfold a little more quickly and with a little more elegance. In her wake, flowers open and shimmer, and dew-kissed grasses glisten with a supernatural brilliance.
It represents the enduring generosity of nature: spontaneously, new life blossoms in spring, providing sustenance and comfort to countless souls. It is thus associated with giving, charity, and compassion, as well as rebirth. Eostrid's wicker basket, magically woven from the vines of her crown at the beginning of each new day, is perpetually overflowing with abundance. The magical eggs, brightly colored and enchanted with different flavors, are among the favorites.
Eostrid makes nighttime visits to the tree bastions outside the Mistwood and the border areas of Yakai. When this happens, a golden glow illuminates the night and seeps through the windows, much to the enchantment and delight of the children. But they must stay in bed and wait for dawn, or risk spoiling Eostrid's game and receiving his disillusioned reprimands.
For those whom the warm glow of Eostrid's presence does not awaken, sleep is sweeter than they let on, rich with happy dreams that allow them to wake up refreshed, cheerful, and full of hope. Those who dare to leave their homes to glimpse her or approach her as she passes through the cities at night are found the next morning lying in the streets or on their doorsteps, passed out in a deep, enchanted sleep. When they are awakened with blows and cold water, they have no memory of Eostrid.
If the villagers let Eostrid carry out her nightly walks, they will wake up in the morning to find their village decorated with treats, treasures, and trinkets. Sweet fruits might hang from the needles of the village sundial, loaves and rolls might line fence posts, and pastries and candies might appear on the windowsills of well-behaved children.
Eostrid enjoys hiding her gifts in clever places throughout the city. She carefully conceals her most precious gifts, such as a golden brooch left on the highest branch or a silver ring adorned with a ruby buried somewhere in a huge holly bush. The day after Eostrid passes through, the entire city typically abandons its daily chores to spend the day searching for treasures, feasting, and rejoicing to thank Eostrid and honor the return of spring.
Although she appears to be benevolent towards mortals who behave well, Eostrid is a powerful sorceress who should not be taken lightly and a fierce adversary of the Darkness. Few have witnessed her wrath, but the Wood Elves remember her tireless efforts during the struggles to purge the Misty Woods of the bastard creatures of the corrupted Heart Tree.
True to her nickname, she is a powerful practitioner of sleep magic, which can incapacitate even Demonic Spawn and Undead, who are generally extremely resistant to fatigue or magical lethargy. Just as she awakens in spring to revitalize the land, she falls into an enchanted sleep when winter arrives. The cycles of hibernation and awakening observed in various animals, associated with the seasons, may be the source of her power of sleepiness.
Eostrid seems free and unencumbered by the politics of the Fae. In this regard, as well as in her wandering nature, she is similar to the wise Fae known as Padraig Grand Oak. Various myths and conjectures claim that Eostrid is his daughter, cousin, or even wife. Their true relationship is uncertain, but they share one important thing: a connection to the ancient Rhythm that existed before the planting of the new Heart Tree and the advent of the Nyrésian Union.
The new Rhythm, born out of absolute necessity following a generational trauma, encourages a much more militant and uncompromising mindset than that displayed by Eostrid and Padraig. Eostrid's altruistic gifts and carefree imagination characterize her as a fairy-like being from a more ancient and optimistic time.
