History of Eostrid chant-rêve

When pollen and petals float in the wind, when animals emerge from their dens with their newborns, when the light of dawn returns as winter's grip loosens, it's the season of Eostrid Chant-rêve, fairy being of young shoots and promising rebirth. A crown of vines and flowers rests on his forehead, and his staff shines with a golden glow that soothes and relaxes the minds of mortals. Children love her, for she is their friend and confidante, and they never doubt her word, unlike adults. Parents love her too, because she helps maintain discipline: the threat of not being allowed to take part in Eostrid festivities and games is a powerful negotiating tool.

Eostrid is the messenger of spring. She doesn't personally cause plants to bloom, snow to melt or the sun to rise earlier, but as she meanders along the paths around the Bois de Brume, she seems to encourage the process to unfold a little faster and with a little more elegance. In her wake, flowers open and shimmer, and dew-kissed grasses shimmer with unearthly brilliance. She represents nature's enduring generosity: spontaneously, new life blooms in spring, providing sustenance and comfort to countless souls. It is thus associated with giving, charity and compassion, as well as rebirth. Eostrid's woven wicker basket
magically from the vines of its crown at the start of each new day, perpetually overflowing with abundance. Magical eggs, brilliantly colored and enchanted with different flavors, are among the favorites.

Eostrid makes nocturnal visits to the tree bastions outside the Misty Woods and the Yakai borderlands. When this happens, a golden glow illuminates the night and seeps through the windows, much to the children's delight and bewitchment. But they must stay in bed and wait for dawn, at the risk of spoiling Eostrid's game and suffering his disillusioned reprimands. For those who are not awakened by the warm luminescence of Eostrid's presence, sleep is sweeter than they let on, rich in happy dreams that allow them to wake up invigorated, cheerful and full of hope. Those who dare to leave their homes to catch a glimpse of her or accost her as she passes through the cities at night are discovered the next morning lying in the streets or on their doorsteps, passed out in a deep, enchanted sleep. When awakened with blows and cold water, they have no memory of Eostrid.

If the inhabitants let Eostrid carry out his nightly walks, they'll discover their village adorned with treats, treasures and trinkets in the morning. Sweet fruit might dangle from the hands of the village sundial, loaves and rolls might line up on hitching posts, and pastries and sweets might appear on the windowsills of well-behaved children. Eostrid enjoys hiding her gifts in ingenious places all over town. She meticulously conceals her most precious gifts, such as a golden brooch left on the highest branch or a silver ruby ring buried somewhere in a huge holly bush. The day after Eostrid's passage, the whole town usually abandons the drudgery of daily life to spend the day searching for treasures, feasting and rejoicing to thank Eostrid and honor the return of spring.

Although she appears to be animated by a benevolent sentiment towards well-behaved mortals, Eostrid is a powerful magician not to be taken lightly, and a fierce adversary of the Darkness. Few have ever witnessed her wrathful countenance, but Sylvan Elves remember her tireless efforts during the struggles to purge the Misty Woods of the bastard creatures of the corrupted Heart Tree. True to her nickname, she is a powerful practitioner of sleep magic, which can incapacitate even Demonic Rejects and Undead who are usually extremely resistant to magical fatigue or lethargy. Just as she awakens in spring to revitalize the land, she plunges into an enchanted sleep when winter arrives. The cycles of hibernation and awakening observed in various animals, associated with the seasons, may be the source of her drowsy power.

Eostrid seems free and unencumbered by the politics of the Fairy Beings. In this respect, and in her wandering nature, she is similar to the wise Fairy Being known as Padraig Great Oak. Various myths and conjectures assert that Eostrid is his daughter, cousin or even wife. Their true relationship is uncertain, but they share one important thing: a link to the old Rhythm that existed before the planting of the new Heart Tree and the advent of the Nyresian Union. The new Rythme, born of absolute necessity following a generational trauma, encourages a far more militant and uncompromising mindset than that displayed by Eostrid and Padraig. Eostrid's altruistic gifts and carefree whimsy characterize her as a Fairy Being from an earlier, more optimistic time.
