History of Ignatius
Ignatus is a unique Ogryn. Although he is as tough and resilient as many of his fellows, his essence has fused with something more, something primordial and igneous. The story of this transformation has its roots in Peltas, among the desolation and heat of the Dawn Mountains.
Ignatius was once a warrior of Aravia, guarding the Felwin Gate. Despite all the fighting this entailed, such a static existence was unappealing to his fiery, daring spirit, and when a famous elven adventurer named Adrion put out a call inviting recruits to join him on an expedition, Ignatius requested his transfer and joined the Elf, becoming the only Ogryn in the group. Adrion intended to make his fortune searching for the artifacts left behind by the enemies slain by Korax, a terrible semi-mythical Demonic Reject. His band ventured from Aravia to the Dead Lands, where they began the arduous trek across Peltas to Korax's supposed lair at the heart of Mount Braise in the Dawn Mountains. According to legend, Korax had long been bound there by a Lightbearer who had almost defeated the Demonic Reject before he escaped into the depths of the mountain.
The group arrived, exhausted, and entered a labyrinth of tunnels leading into the heart of the mountain itself. Ignatius was given the responsibility of ensuring their survival, smashing through the rubble barricades and throwing his smaller companions through the cracks. Seemingly against all odds, they advanced to the center of the mountain and discovered what they had longed for: a cache of ancestral magical tools, tomes and weapons, once carried by those whom the Demonic Reject had slain over the centuries.
So this part of the legend was true. However, Korax had not been bound by a Lightbearer and was merely slumbering. Awakened by the presence of souls disturbing his tranquility for the first time in decades, Korax roared in embracing fury, flooding the tunnels with fire and immolating most of the group trying to flee. Ignatius was able to drag Adrion to safety before the others were destroyed by the flames, but both survivors were burned, especially the Elf. Despite Ignatius' best efforts, Adrion perished.
In this new situation, namely that he was smaller than his opponent, the Ogryn took the narrower tunnels to avoid the huge Demonic Reject. The flames had scorched his weaker companions, but Ignatius' flesh was as tough as iron and almost as impervious, so he pressed on. With Korax unable to catch him, but relentlessly patrolling the wider tunnels, the Ogryn lived for months in the mountain maze, enduring through underground springs and moss, while searching for an exit. Her body gradually adapted to its new environment, aided unwittingly by the magical fire elements of the Demonic Reject, its papules and burns forming a new, solid, chiselled flesh not unlike Korax's molten skin.
After spending an inordinate amount of time unable to find a way out of the mountain's smallest tunnels, Ignatius decided to stop trying to escape. Instead, he decided to confront Korax, as continuing to run and cower seemed shameful. When he was certain that Korax was chasing him elsewhere, he entered the main chamber in the center of the mountain and searched for a weapon among those left behind by the Demon Reject's defeated adversaries. He unearthed a large mass of burning rock, which he named Magma, as well as pieces of armor and equipment, then faced Korax. The Demonic Reject was tired after the hunt and after burning so many tunnels in the mountain, but even so, the confrontation between the two lasted for hours and shook Mount Ember from its peak to its roots. Finally, in a terrible blow, Ignatius swung Magma and pulverized Korax's horned skull.
The Ogryn rejoiced, but felt no desire to resume his dreary existence in Aravia. The flames of Mount Brais had burned deep not only into his flesh, but also into his soul, transforming him and, in a way, binding him to it. Ignatius chose to stay, building a stronghold in the tunnels, and using Korax's skin and bones to construct a grand mansion. Stories told by desert nomads and Velyzar merchants of a mighty Ogryn shrouded in flame who could spit lava and crush Demonic Rejects spread like wildfire throughout Peltas, and he became as famous a legend as the Demonic Reject he had slaughtered. Other Ogryn sought him out, and now an entire tribe inhabits Mont Braise, a gathering of burled-skinned brutes with eyes in which flames burn. Perhaps Ignatius is content to stay in his new home, or perhaps he's just gathering his strength, until one day his new tribe will march forth and carve out a place for itself among Teleria's greatest.
