Grossière, violente et extrêmement douée pour frapper les visages – à condition qu’elle puisse les atteindre, sinon, les tripes et les aines feront l’affaire – Gala Longbraids est vraiment l’incarnation d’une dame naine digne de ce nom (d’après ses propres dires, en tout cas). En effet, de nombreux habitants de la surface seraient choqués de réaliser que Gala fait en fait partie de la noblesse, fille d’un Jarl respecté et héritière d’une ancienne lignée.
Le choc de cette prise de conscience, visible sur leurs visages, n’a jamais manqué d’amuser Gala jusqu’à présent. Bien qu’elle ait eu du mal à supporter son père autoritaire et surprotecteur pendant son enfance, les talents particuliers de Gala n’ont pas été gâchés. Après avoir vu sa fille se bagarrer bien trop souvent avec ses compagnons, le vieux jarl l’a autorisée à contrecœur à s’entraîner aux différents arts de la guerre.
Cette décision s’était avérée judicieuse lorsque les légions de Siroth avaient envahi la forteresse du jarl, l’assiégeant et la réduisant presque à néant. N’ayant jamais envisagé d’être une demoiselle en détresse, Gala s’empara d’un des marteaux ornés de l’armurerie du château et se lança dans la bataille. Même les soldats les plus aguerris de la Garde d’honneur du Jarl ne purent s’empêcher de laisser tomber leur mâchoire un instant en voyant Gala se fracasser dans la masse hurlante de griffes, de crocs et de cornes qui déferlait sur la forteresse.
Ce n’était pas seulement son talent époustouflant, mais aussi son intrépidité et l’agressivité pure de sa technique. Gala se battait comme une ourse enragée, et aucune armure, enchantée ou non, ne pouvait sauver la racaille démoniaque de sa colère. Enhardis, les gardes du Jarl poussèrent des cris de guerre et brisèrent la colonne vertébrale de l’armée démoniaque en une journée de combat acharné. À la fin de la bataille, même le père de Gala resta bouche bée.
Le vieil homme se dit qu’il devait s’agir du moment le plus glorieux de sa vie : se battre aux côtés de sa fille et remporter une victoire digne de leurs grands ancêtres. Bien sûr, il continuait à ronchonner et à maudire lorsque le royaume était en sécurité et que la soif d’aventure de Gala l’amenait à rejoindre l’expédition du roi à la surface. Mais jamais plus il ne se laissa entraver par le destin de son enfant.
