History of Gurptuk Mossbeard
Many ancient mysteries lie buried within the trees of Durham Forest. Some are beautiful, others dangerous, deadly, and best left forgotten. Beasts, bandits, and ruthless dark elves all prey on the unwary, and only the greatest adventurers can hope to survive if they stray from the beaten paths of the forest.
Curiously, there is someone brave enough (or perhaps crazy enough) to take up residence in the very heart of Durham. Some say he is a spirit of nature, a benevolent guardian of the woods whose cabin is always open to the lost and weary. Others swear he is a monster—hunger and malice made flesh, always thirsting for the blood of innocents.
One thing is certain. Whatever this creature may be, its power is immense. Beware, O summoner, for only the boldest may hope to unravel this mystery and recruit a new champion to their cause. Durham Forest is a place of ancient magic and mystery, where many dangers await the unwary who venture beyond its borders.
Vicious predators and man-eating monsters lurk in the perpetual twilight that envelops Durham, ruthless Dark Elves attack travelers, and vile undead creatures make their lair in the winding thickets. But there is a clearing in the very heart of the forest, where an old hut stands.
Neither beasts nor elves dare approach it, for they know that the master of the place has little patience for unwelcome guests and is powerful enough to ensure that their transgressions are duly punished. No one, not even the oldest rulers of the Dark Elves, knows when or how Gurptuk the Mossbearded came to be in Durham.
For as long as anyone can remember, he was simply there, earning his living in the depths of the woods. Dozens of tales and myths surround his figure; some claim that Gurptuk is in fact a fae, a guardian of nature and the true master of Durham; others believe he is an old, mad shaman who made a pact with dark forces to grant him immortality in exchange for terrible sacrifices he must perform.
In any case, Moss-Beard looks like an ogryn, although the wooden armor and amulets he wears may explain why he is mistaken for a forest spirit. His behavior does not fit a single pattern either, and while some speak of Moss-Beard helping lost travelers find their way back to the beaten path, others tell blood-curdling tales of people being slaughtered and used for unknown, sinister purposes.
But there are those who are bold or foolish enough to seek out Gurptuk, for it is said that he is a sorcerer of immense power and that his knowledge of poisons is almost unmatched. One day, an ambitious group of dark elf assassins wanted to rid his family of such an inconvenient neighbor and cover themselves in glory in the process.
They watched the Beard-Moss from afar, plotting to bring him down. When they struck, they did so with ruthless cunning and speed, firing poisoned arrows at the old druid in hopes of weakening him. But something went wrong.
Although Gurptuk suffered numerous injuries, he did not fall as his would-be assassins expected, nor did he even stumble. Instead, he laughed. And as his attackers looked on in horror, he stood tall and proud, a cloud of noxious spores rising from the mushrooms that covered his body.
Despite the poison coursing through his veins, despite the arrows in his limbs and back, Gurptuk the Mossbeard stepped forward and chanted in an unknown language, his staff sending out flashes of arcane energy that burned through armor and flesh alike. The assassins turned to flee, but there was nowhere to run or hide from Gurptuk's vengeance.
One after another, they fell, without anyone knowing exactly what painful fate had befallen them. After that night, a row of fresh skulls could be seen adorning the fence surrounding his hut.
With no survivors left, rumors and speculation spread like wildfire, and Beard-Moss's fearsome reputation grew. Today, even the most ambitious dark elf warriors know to leave the druid alone.
