Story of Jack the Harvester

Teleria has always been full of nightmares and things to fear. Raiders and brigands, Siroth and his minions, who constantly plot the downfall and enslavement of the mortal kingdoms, the undead who roam the darkest nights in search of victims to devour or bewitch. But there is one being that primitive horror has made manifest.

The superstitious peasants of Kaerok, where this being first appeared, call it "Harvest Jack." In reality, references to an evil spirit with almost identical powers and appearance can be found in much older cultures. But for some reason, it disappeared from history and remained dormant until about three centuries ago.

The name is no coincidence, as Harvest Jack was first spotted during Lozrayn, a harvest festival originating in Kaerok. His motivations and goals are unclear, but they are always malicious in some way. Jack is known for playing tricks on the unwary, seeking to frighten them—some say that all his victims die of fear and that Jack devours their souls, which is not entirely accurate—or for appearing in the midst of celebrations and sending the peasants fleeing in all directions.

However, sometimes this turns into senseless slaughter. Scholars theorize that Harvest Jack feeds on the fear of mortals and will do whatever it takes to provoke nightmares that will sustain him. The spirit always gathers in the form of a whirlwind of arcane energies or, perhaps, twisted souls gathered into a single dark consciousness.

His birth is described as a flash of blinding light, followed by a terrifying form that slowly materializes. His pumpkin head twists and sculpts itself into a grin of jagged teeth, his scythe burns with the cold flame of death, and his power warps benevolent magic until it fades and turns to harm those it was meant to help. Harvest Jack's latest appearance has been widely reported, but details are scarce.

Witnesses claim that the malevolent entity burst forth from a pumpkin patch in the middle of the fair and ran amok. Had four brave warriors not intervened, it would have caused a massacre of terrifying proportions. But even these noble souls were no match for the spirit of darkness, whose strength grew as the Shadow reigned over Teleria.

It took the personal appearance of the Arbiter, who had resurrected his champions and crossed his sacred sword with Harvest Jack's evil scythe, to repel the revenant. Since then, Harvest Jack has often appeared under the full moon on cold autumn nights, always hungry, always searching for unfortunate mortals to feed on. It is unclear whether this type of power can be trapped in a shard, but if so, the revenant's dark powers will certainly be useful in the fight against Siroth.
