History of Kantra the Cyclone
Noisy and cheerful, Kantra, nicknamed "Cyclone" for her fierce fighting technique, is one of Aravia's most renowned mercenaries. Although young, she has seen a lot in her life, and her origins have inspired more than one minstrel to compose ballads and songs of varying quality.
For although she looks, fights, and behaves like a barbarian from the East, Kantra is not actually one of them. She was born into a small, poor noble family in southern Tilshire. Her father, a dishonorable and greedy man, is largely responsible for the family's problems. His gambling habits quickly racked up debts beyond even a nobleman's ability to manage, and he hoped that a suitable marriage would help him handle the loans.
All that remained was to ensure that his daughter would be sufficiently proper and obedient to accept the old bag of money that would offer the most for her beauty.
Kantra, as is often the case in these stories, did not want it. She had always been a free spirit, inspired by legends of warrior queens and noble knights, eager to learn the art of the blade.
Although her father forbade it, the young noblewoman seized every opportunity that came her way in her small, remote town, and they were few and far between. The situation could not last indefinitely; when tensions finally erupted into violent conflict, Kantra fled her home and her father's abuse. In retrospect, it was an ill-advised decision that could have led to her death.
But luck smiled on him, and Kantra's path crossed that of a band of barbarian mercenaries. These were warriors born into the same clan, for whom honor meant more than the ransom that a captive of high birth could bring. They took Kantra in, taught him to fight and to live as freely as the spirits of the wind.
And so the future warrior cast aside the trappings of her former life and embraced her adopted culture with an enthusiasm that never failed to amuse her mentors. She grew up strong, determined, always eager for challenges, and far too inclined to bite off more than she could chew.
One of these fights nearly cost Kantra her life; she fought with a gang of orc vendors over a minor insult uttered by one of the drunks. By the end of the fight, the tavern was trashed, most of the orcs were dead or scattered throughout the city, and Kantra had lost an eye.
She had to flee before the insulted thugs had time to gather other friends to avenge the humiliation inflicted on them by the cheeky young human. Today, many stories about the origins of a hero tell how an arrogant warrior learned restraint and respect after narrowly escaping death.
For better or worse, Kantra is nothing like those heroes. She is still as rude, haughty, and wild as ever, and the fight that cost her an eye is one of her favorite bragging rights rather than a cautionary tale for young people.
In all honesty, Kantra has increased her skills tenfold since that day, and she has defeated countless opponents, which has certainly been enough to cement her reputation. Although she leads a dangerous life, always walking a tightrope, risking everything for excitement or pride, Kantra savors every moment. Indeed, why would she change when a life of great adventure, full of danger and glory, is more intoxicating than the finest wine of Arabia?
