Matriarch Zarguna's story
Matriarch Zarguna was born in the rugged foothills of the Red Peaks Mountains, a descendant of the survivors of the Gaelic War. She married twice and bore children, but her husbands died young.
To overcome her grief, Zarguna took up martial training, believing she had to become strong to protect herself and her children from more misfortune. She also took on the duties of clan leadership, seeing her status and prestige grow, while raising her children alone. It was many years before she managed to entertain the idea of becoming a wife and mother again.
The one who overcame Zarguna's reluctance was Karnthan, leader of a troop of orc mercenaries called the Usurpers. Karnthan's carefree lifestyle attracted her, and his charm won her affection.
With her children now older, she announced that she would become his companion and travel with him, and although her clan would sorely miss her advice, they respected her desire to follow her heart. However, her cycle of tragedy was not yet over.
Zarguna and Karnthan had a daughter, Zargala, the last of Zarguna's children. Twenty years of travel, battles and adventures followed. But after this long period of remission, misfortune befell Zarguna once again when, following an ill-fated contract with the Lord of the Oriflamme Sire Marston, the Usurpers were annihilated.
The knights impaled Karnthan on their spears while Zarguna and Zargala watched in horror. As the massacre continued, Zargala was knocked unconscious. Her friend Grengar defended her until he too fell, driving Zarguna into a reckless flight. The surviving knights told the story of a massive Orc whose war paint had been washed with blood, wielding a huge hammer-axe studded with beast teeth and sending armored Humans flying through the air with every blow.
When she regained her senses, she found she'd been pushed to the edge of the battlefield, suffering dozens of open wounds as Marston's troops scoured the terrain, looting the dead and killing the wounded Orcs. The attackers had suffered heavy losses, but the Usurpers were all but eradicated and Zarguna had no choice but to leave the bodies of her family and friends where they lay.
She stomped away. Her limbs were leaden, her belly upturned, tears streamed down her cheeks and her heartbeat pounded behind her eyes. She could protect no one, not even her husband and child. As she nursed her wounds and left Kaerok, she wondered if leaving her clan and children behind had been a folly, if they hated her for it.
There was only one way to find out, the only place where she could even attempt to rebuild her life. She returned to her former clan and was warmly welcomed. But it was clear that the tragedy had created an emptiness inside her, and the celebrations for Zarguna's return had a slightly sombre side.
She reconciled with her children, who now had children of their own. Seeing two generations of her family, now larger than ever, strengthened her resolve. She would die before letting down another of those she loved, and she would never abandon them again.
A few days later, Zarguna heard that the Orc warlord Artak had called a great gathering. He proposed a war against Kaerok to avenge his many misdeeds against the Orcs. Zarguna refused to help, but enough others agreed. Artak launched his war.
The bastion of Zarguna became a haven of peace for wounded orc veterans and deserters from Artak's army. She welcomed them all, keeping her territory neutral for all those seeking refuge from destruction. Her greatest principle was that Orc strength lay in defending the vulnerable.
The Lords of the Oriflamme and Artak's coalition took her tolerance and non-alignment as an affront, and tried to conquer her stronghold. Zarguna crushed these assaults, throwing the attackers off the walls and holding the gates against the waves of bodies hurled at her.
Between interrogations of captives and news of new arrivals, Zarguna learned that Zargala had survived and even avenged her father. She was struck with guilt and joy, anxiety and nostalgia, dismay for the years lost, tempered by hope for those to come. She sent messengers to find her daughter. Days and weeks passed.
Every time there was a knock on her door or she saw the portals open, she wondered whether it was Zargala who would appear or messengers bringing dark news. The questions gnawed at her mind. Had Zargala felt abandoned and alienated? Would she be forced to choose between family loyalty and the life she had created for herself?
Would she want a relationship with her mother? With age beginning to set in, Zarguna was thinking about the future and her succession, and she wished to offer Zargala a rightful place among her heirs. All Zarguna knew was that she had to provide her daughter with all the information she needed to inform her of her plans.
