Story of Noct le Paralyseur
In the web of ongoing Dark Elf infighting, many have risen to unimaginable levels of infamy, and few more so than Noct the Stunner. Noct began his career serving in the personal guard of a noble family, but his cruel disregard for life and absolute lack of discipline won him few friends.
For Noct, fighting was simply the means to an end; a way of giving in to the sadistic tendencies that had hitherto been hidden within him without suffering the consequences.
Unable to obey orders to the satisfaction of his superiors, Noct soon found himself idle. Few employed him as a mercenary or bodyguard because of his generally unpleasant behavior and unpredictable nature, and he had no desire to dig the earth as a mushroom farmer.
With few options open to him, Noct reluctantly adopted the life of a Ranger. It was not a pleasant time, for the forest was wilder and more ferocious than any Dark Elf was truly aware, and dangers abounded, even for a killer as seasoned as Noct.
Hesitant to travel the perilous paths of the forest, Noct often chose to travel in the canopy. It was on one of these trips that he met his match. A voracious hard-shelled insect as large as himself, one of the countless species that inhabited the deepest parts of the forest. The insect stalked him through the canopy and was on him before he knew it.
Only Noct's quick reflexes saved him from the creature's scimitar-like claws, but its weight sent them tumbling from the high branches to the branches and forest floor. They crossed an ancestral stone slab into the depths of what looked like a forgotten temple that the woods had reclaimed centuries before. Stunned by the fall, Noct could only watch as his assailant ran towards him, intent on finishing what he'd started.
He never reached it. A colony of smaller insects, round, buzzing shapes that glowed with emerald iridescence, attacked the creature, stinging it to immobilize it. Noct made no further move, instinctively realizing that to move meant to die. He remained motionless, barely daring to breathe. The colony prowled for a while, then retreated into the darkness of the ruin, leaving Noct alive... and curious.
Noct examined the largest insect and discovered to his surprise that it was still alive, but paralyzed. He considered shooting it, but something made him hesitate. Instead, he retreated to safety and waited. Soon, the colony returned, in greater numbers. As Noct watched, the insects fed on their victim, eating him alive over the course of several days.
Noct then had an epiphany. He seized the opportunity to kill one of the creatures as it separated from the colony, then carefully untied his poison bags. Dipping his extremely curved tears into the poison, he decided to test his hypothesis on several unfortunate Rangers who passed by the ruin.
Through trial and error, Noct realized that he could paralyze an opponent with the slightest scratch from one of his cutters or with a well-placed blow, distributing the poison throughout the target's bloodstream, stopping his heart, lungs and brain in a matter of moments. Further experimentation revealed that varying quantities could cause excruciating pain rather than death, induce nightmare-filled sleep or paralyze specific body parts such as the eyes, ears or limbs.
Satisfied with his experiments, Noct decided that the time had come to put his new knowledge into practice. He gathered bits and pieces of insect prey to make his own armor, and chose his equipment from his own victims. After noting the location of the ruin for his future poison needs, he left, returning to the undergrowth towns where his people resided. But not as a Ranger.
Instead, Noct decided to embark on a new career: that of assassin. Over the following months, Noct learned to use the venoms of dozens of insectoid species, and quickly established his reputation as a trader in exquisitely painful deaths.
Not content with simply killing his targets, Noct tortures his victims as a warning to anyone thinking of angering his customers. He often leaves paralyzed victims for insects in the forest, or buries them alive. As for the others, he simply incapacitates them, leaving them to die in incredible agony.
Stories of Noct's atrocious exploits quickly spread throughout Durham Forest, and a stream of potential customers vying for his services followed.
