History of Onryo leyasu

He is known as Onryo Ieyasu. No one knows his true name. He roams the length and breadth of Yakai, his gaze bright and tireless. Countless tyrants and warlords, Demonic Spawn, have fallen beneath his blade and bow. Screaming spirits have been scattered with a single strike, and shuffling Undead have been turned to dust by his blessed dagger.

Thanks to all these triumphs, he has saved many innocent lives, but he has never stopped to dwell on it. He does not pause for a second after a victory, but continues on his slow and measured march, guided by currents of magic and intuition toward the next evil he must destroy.

Ieyasu is very ancient, even older than Yakai as a coherent state, born when the area was called the Lands of Dawn. The Human who would become Ieyasu was clearly an exalted warrior, for he was buried with numerous charms and protective spells to ensure his eternal peaceful rest. A sanctified dagger was tied to his mouth, and he was wrapped in paper talismans covered with incantations against the Darkness.

His body decomposed at an abnormally slow rate, kept in a state of equilibrium by his magical protection. The charms around him withered and disintegrated, but their magic remained powerful on his person.

Centuries later, Siroth unleashed the Scourge of Darkness, and true Undead set foot in Teleria. The Scourge was so powerful that even the ancient holy magic of the Lands of Dawn was unable to prevent a seed of Undead life from taking root in the body of the ancient warrior.

The protected body trembled and twisted, but the weight of the earth that had settled around it over the years held it in place. The warrior's spirit had long since disappeared, but after many decades buried in the ground, a new spirit took shape, formed from the conflict between Light and Darkness, Death-life and the magic of life and hope. Unfinished and deprived of all sensory stimulation, it raged against its own being and became obsessed with the ultimate destruction of all creatures of Darkness, including itself.

After many centuries, the body was exposed to daylight by the hoes and shovels of the Shadow Clan laborers who were digging a canal: their last act as living beings. The Undead rose from the loose earth and beat a worker with his bare hands, then pulled out the ceremonial blade with which he had been buried and cut up the rest. The revenant sensed an evil that covered the land, the defilement of the puppets of Mikage of Siroth and their tyrannical reign.

Rumors then spread about a hunter of autocrats and Mikage soldiers, sleepless and unshakeable. When their henchmen brutalized rebellious peasants, Ieyasu would appear. He would restore balance and strike down the bodies agitated by Death-life on the battlefield littered with corpses.

Cruel aristocrats known as Demonic Spawn were slain in their lavish mansions, their bodyguards killed or driven back in terror, their undead servants destroyed. After several months and numerous reports of his presence, even Lady Mikage recognized the threat posed by this «Onryo Ieyasu,» as he was then called, and ordered her subordinates to destroy this dangerous adversary.

Morikore the Ruthless, a fearless tyrant, gathered his most powerful warriors and set out to hunt down Ieyasu, but they were killed to the last, their entrails scattered on the grass and Morikore's head left at the foot of his body. A powerful necromancer from the Shadow Clan, Tsukyu, suspected Ieyasu's nature and sought to take control of him.

To help him control the revenant, she brought her finest creation, an undead amalgam made from the flesh and bones of members of the Shadow Clan and horses. But the Onryo pierced its thick muscles and tendons as if they were empty air, severing the Shadow magic from the creation upon contact with his sacred blade.

With a few quick strikes, the monster collapsed, transformed into large, quivering pieces. Alarmed, Tsukyu uttered a few words of dark power, trying to force the Death-life that animated Ieyasu to recognize her as its mistress. But his magical protections deflected the sorcery of her words and burned her mouth to ashes. With her spells proving ineffective, Ieyasu made short work of her.

The fall of the Mikage Autocracy did nothing to quell Ieyasu's relentless thirst for purging. Even today, the ghost clad in weathered armor still wanders, a reckless force of nature. Woe betide anyone who associates with demons or reanimated undead anywhere in the lands of Yakai, for Onryo Ieyasu will put these villains to death, unwaveringly and inexorably.

His vengeful surveillance is exhaustive, and some believe that there is more than one Onryo, since the burial rites and funeral cycle almost certainly used on him in the early Lands of Dawn centuries ago are no longer observed in the current ways of the Yakai. The Three Sovereigns have called upon the citizens to rid it of its demons, or at least pray in the ancient Lands of Dawn that it will finally abandon its role in this endless cycle of purging to defend.
