History of Othorion the Master
The garrisons of the vast expanse of Felwin's Wall are almost entirely composed of non-elf auxiliaries. They are supervised by the Masters of the Wall, a small elite group of senior High Elf officers. To earn the respect of the auxiliaries, the Wall Masters must perfectly embody Aravian military prowess: their equipment must be impeccable, their courage and endurance unmatched, their self-discipline rigorous. In short, they must demonstrate elven superiority and demand the highest standards from their subordinates.
In the decades following the Wall's construction, the Wall Masters achieved extraordinary feats in defending it against incursions, but few earned the reputation enjoyed by the "relentless" Wall Master, Othorion. He is the embodiment of everything that commanding defenses means, a paragon of military discipline and mastery of weapons, driven by steely courage and an unyielding sense of duty.
Othorion's value quickly became apparent, even though it was almost mistaken for blind bloodlust. As a non-commissioned officer in the regular Aravian forces, he demonstrated tactical acumen and ingenuity.
Admiring the efforts of the Masters of the Wall and the way they not only protected Aravia but also hunted down deserters and traitors, he requested a transfer to serve alongside them. His wish was granted, though he almost came to regret it: the commander of the section to which he was assigned, Ythandril, would have been a good officer in the regular Aravian army, but he was not a Wall Master-born.
A few days after Othorion took up his post, disaster struck. The auxiliaries, mainly Ogryns, mutinied. They refused to take their places on the Wall and paid no attention to Othorion's orders. Indecision paralyzed Ythandril.
Knowing that calling in reinforcements from other sections risked spreading discontent, Othorion sent a rider to the nearest High Elf garrison. Reinforcements arrived quickly. Consumed by rage, Othorion completely forgot about Ythandril and ordered the reinforcements to slaughter the Ogryn, down to the last auxiliary.
While the Aravians generally treated mutineers harshly, Othorion's actions were considered excessively brutal. His situation only worsened when Ythandril tried to make him a scapegoat for what had happened, citing the Elf's blatant insubordination.
However, this delicate situation did not last long. While the commander of the reinforcements was considering stripping Othorion of his rank, lookouts spotted movement beyond the wall. As the High Elves rushed to the parapet, they found themselves facing a large-scale assault by Dark Elves, resulting in an exhausting battle that lasted throughout the day and night. Once again, Othorion proved himself in the thick of the fray, while Ythandril remained hidden at the top of the Wall.
Following an investigation, it became clear that infiltrated Dark Elves had deliberately fomented mutiny among the auxiliaries, with the intention of timing it to coincide with their attack. Had Othorion not acted so quickly and decisively, a breach would certainly have been made in the Wall. In the end, Ythandril was relieved of his command and Othorion was promoted to Lord of the Wall in his place.
He swore an oath that day never to be as weak as Ythandril, nor to give in to anger as he had done when he ordered the slaughter of the Ogryn. In the decades since, Othorion has remained true to his word, proving himself to be the ideal Master of the Wall. His armor is always polished to a shine, his weapons are always razor sharp, and he is extremely attentive to detail.
The auxiliaries who now serve under Othorion's command have great respect for him. Indeed, military analyses have proven that they are one of the most disciplined troops stationed on the Wall. It was the auxiliaries themselves who nicknamed him »the relentless Wall Master," reflecting his unwavering will, his calmness in battle, and his harsh but fair attitude toward justice.
He promptly punishes crimes and mediocre standards within the limits permitted by the Wall's codes, but no auxiliary can complain that Othorion has accused the wrong soldier, or shown favoritism or petty cruelty. To them, it is obvious that he recognizes the role they play in Aravia's security, as they have never had any reason to complain about the level of equipment they receive, nor the quantity or quality of their rations.
Othorion's duties as Lord of the Wall require him to track down and eliminate threats beyond the Wall as well. He has no qualms about venturing deep into the Durham Forest, and neither the Dark Elves nor the vicious predators that inhabit this sinister realm are safe from his great bow or blade. Sometimes he does this alone, sometimes with a detachment of elite warriors, but he has always achieved his goal thus far.
Now, alongside the outcast Gwyndolin the Silent, Othorion has been ordered to hunt down the notorious traitor, Belanor, who abandoned his responsibilities to follow the Dark Elf named Zavia. Such weakness disgusts the Master of the Iron Wall, and it is unlikely that he will show mercy to these criminals when he catches them.
