History of Reine éva

Long ago, the High Elves and Dark Elves were one people: the Elves of Aravia—the oldest and most powerful kingdom in Teleria. But after centuries of proud resistance against the forces of darkness during the Age of Hellfire, a spirit known as the Dreamwalker dismantled everything.

He spoke to countless Elves in their sleep, promising them power, knowledge, beauty, and truth. He gave them magic and wisdom, but it was all tainted. Over time, the gifts of the Dreamwalker turned to poison, and when the Arbiter arrived in Aravia, she saw that it was the work of Siroth.

The king of Aravia at the time convened the very first Conclave of Elves, but his attempts to suppress the followers of the Dreamwalker only served to alienate them. A war ensued, pitting the king's loyalists—the High Elves—against those who followed the Dreamwalker—the Dark Elves.

Decades of brutal violence only came to an end with a second intervention by the Arbiter, this time with an army at his side. He imposed a second Elven Conclave, but this failed to unite the elven people, only serving to separate the two camps: the High Elves in Aravia, and the Dark Elves in the nearby forest of Durham.

This act was supposed to end the Elven War. Instead, it only changed its flavor. The conflict between Aravia and Durham lasted over a hundred years. The fighting sometimes took place in the shadows, sometimes on the battlefield, but the violence and hatred never ceased.

However, total war was never imminent, until the King of Aravia was killed during a punitive expedition to Durham. If a warmonger had succeeded to the throne of Aravia, the violence would have been terrible... but instead, the next monarch was his daughter, Eva. Queen Eva had often dreamed of a world without war between the High Elves and the Dark Elves.

His response to these incessant battles was twofold: the construction of a great wall and the holding of a new Conclave. These two measures would once again change the course of the war.

The wall was supposed to end the cycle of violence. It would not be guarded by High Elves, but by Ogryn and Skinwalker auxiliaries—second-class citizens in the eyes of the High Elves, whose deaths defending Aravia would not provoke as much anger among their people. Meanwhile, the Conclave would allow dialogue between the High Elves and the Dark Elves for the first time in centuries.

This wall became known by the name of its designer, Felwin, and its construction achieved the desired result, but not the great Conclave of Queen Eva. Most of the discussions boiled down to shouting and accusations, and there was little cooperation.

Other conclaves were organized—dozens over the years—but unity remained elusive; indeed, Queen Eva had to face assassins from the Dark Elves and even from her own people on more than one occasion. However, the skill of her guards and her own courage prevailed over her enemies, and over the decades, the Elves of both kingdoms came to regard the Conclaves as preferable to battles. It was a victory, albeit an incomplete one.

However, with time and age, the queen fears that time will steal her victory. If establishing true peace takes longer than her lifetime, a more militant successor could quickly undo all her work. Queen Eva's quest took a more desperate turn, and she eventually turned to the Dreamwalker.

Queen Eva discovered that the secret spirit was more than happy to teach her what he knew. But of course, as in ancient times, the Dreamwalker's lessons had a poisonous side. He transformed Queen Eva's despair, measure by measure, into paranoia.

Peace remained her mission, but the Dreamwalker spoke of conspiracy, and the increasingly desperate queen believed him. In her mind, her enemies multiplied rapidly, first within the elven courts, then in the kingdoms of her neighbors. Peace with Durham would no longer suffice. All of Anhelt must be subdued.

It was at this point in history that King Tayba of Kaerok broke centuries of peace and attacked his former allies in the Free Cities. This was precisely the provocation that the Dreamwalker had warned about.

On Queen Eva's furious orders, Aravia struck Kaerok with all her might, disregarding alliances. If Queen Eva could not persuade the powers of Anhelt to accept peace through diplomacy, she would bring it about by the sword.
