Mais, bien sûr, il n’y a pas que l’amour marqué par une intervention divine ou une tragédie qui mérite l’attention du ménestrel. Ceux-ci sont simplement bons pour le flair dramatique que ces chevaliers du luth apprécient tant. Le plus souvent, l’amour surmonte des obstacles moins grandioses à l’échelle cosmique, mais non moins difficiles pour les mortels qui se retrouvent enlacés.
L’Ordre sacré dans son ensemble, sans nécessairement imposer un vœu de chasteté, interdit à ses membres d’avoir des familles et des héritiers – une précaution visant à s’assurer que les positions de pouvoir au sein de l’Ordre se transmettent par le droit de la vertu, et non par celui du sang. L’attachement injustifié est également fortement désapprouvé, voire carrément interdit dans certaines des divisions les plus strictes de l’Ordre.
Il n’est donc pas surprenant que les chevaliers Romero et Juliana n’aient jamais pensé tomber amoureux. Romero, toujours calme et pieux, s’est trouvé en désaccord avec la jeune et effrontée Juliana, dont l’habileté à manier la lame et le zèle ardent l’ont conduite à de nombreux périls mortels qu’elle a honorablement surmontés, ce qui est tout à l’honneur de la jeune chevalière.
Mais une vie remplie de batailles a tendance à faire déborder les émotions. Avec le temps, les deux hommes s’habituèrent aux “bizarreries” de l’autre, et apprirent même à les apprécier. Leur union, même si elle n’a jamais été officialisée par un mariage, reste vraie et éprouvée.
Cette union n’a pas non plus affecté leur relation en tant que compagnons d’armes ; au contraire, elle a permis aux deux chevaliers de se battre comme un seul homme. Là où la prudence naturelle de Romero peut lui faire perdre son élan, les tactiques effrontées mais non moins habiles de Juliana permettent à leurs forces de contrôler l’initiative.
Et lorsque Juliana commence à se perdre dans le feu de l’action, Romero est toujours là pour servir d’ancre à la raison. Aujourd’hui encore, ils font partie des principaux guerriers de l’Ordre et sont prêts à apporter la lumière de Lumaya là où elle est le plus nécessaire.
