History of Scyl des Drakes
Scyl of the Drakes is a terrifying force to behold on the battlefield. Her ranseur glinting in the sunlight as it whistles through the air in brutal movements, her dragon-scale cape floating behind her, Scyl presents an imposing image worthy of a true warrior queen. Her enemies falter and break, unable to match her fury, while her allies find themselves invigorated in her presence, their fatigue and pain banished by the blessings of the Phoenix.
Once, Scyl was just a terrified young girl, orphaned by the ruthless cult of Revenant Knights who had razed her village to the ground and massacred its inhabitants. Only Scyl managed to escape, but she was a child trapped in the Dead Lands, with no hope of survival.
She should have died there, but providence intervened. The Disciples of the Drake, a group of dragon-worshipping outcasts and exiles, found Scyl when she had already fainted from dehydration and hunger. They took her back to their lair and nursed her back to health. In return, she was sworn into the service of the troop, although it soon became clear that Scyl's talents lay not in cleaning, cooking and the countless daily needs of the camp, but rather in the art of battle.
As the Disciples were small in number, any new blood was welcome among their warriors, and Scyl proved both capable and passionate. She outshone all her peers and many older, more experienced opponents when she reached adulthood, quickly taking her place among the raiding parties and earning her share of glory in uncompromising attacks against orcs, undead and Revenant knights who ventured into the Dead Lands.
In due course, she rose to lead a small group of young warriors, which grew along with her reputation. Scyl's reckless courage won her many victories over the years, but nearly cost her everything she owned.
When a group of Revenant Knights was discovered camping in the parched cliffs of Gronfang Ravine, Scyl, blinded by hatred, ordered an attack. She and her warriors were outnumbered, but they had the element of surprise on their side and struck under the cover of night.
With stones hurled from the cliffs and skirmishers moving among the rocks like vengeful spectres, Scyl's warriors rained down death on the enemy. But the initial confusion faded, and the cultists threw themselves into the fray with mad fury, overwhelming the Disciples with their numbers and ferocity. Scyla fought in the front ranks, as she always did, even as her warriors fell around her.
Though wounded and bruised in the brutal melee, she made her way to the black priest in armor who led the force of the Revenant Knights. They clashed under the starry Krokhan sky, and steel met steel. The duel lasted several minutes, with neither combatant gaining the upper hand, but soon the cultists began pouring in to help their leader. Killing them all cost Scyl precious time and strength.
In the end, she missed a sledgehammer blow that shattered her ribs and left her gasping for breath on the sand, as her adversary prepared to deliver the final blow. But Scyl was not a warrior ready to give up, even in the worst of circumstances. At the last moment, she managed to grab her spear and plunge it into the priest's dark heart, sending him back to his twisted master. Silence had fallen over the ravine; apart from Scyl, there was not a living soul left among the cliffs, and even she could feel the life draining from her body.
Revenge and bitter triumph were her only companions at the moment, but she wasn't destined to die. Unbeknownst to her, a powerful djinn was watching the battle from afar, and was so impressed by the young woman's brazen skill that he deigned to appear the day after the massacre.
Enveloped in flames, he took on the appearance of a phoenix and spoke words of praise and blessing to Scyl. She received a small fraction of his magic, her wounds mending before her eyes. The spirit vanished, leaving only an exquisite cloak of dragon scales in its wake, the last gift it wished to give to the warrior who had so impressed it.
Scyl spent the day giving the appropriate funeral rites to her fallen warriors and returned alone to the troop, where she was hailed as a heroine. Her reputation grew and, after many battles, she herself became leader of the Disciples of the Drake. To this day, they are a force to be reckoned with in the Krokhan desert, and Siroth's servants avoid venturing into their territory on pain of incurring the wrath of Scyl of the Drakes.
