History of Skarg the Elder
Skarg was born into the violence of the Winterlands during the Hellfire Age, where he quickly learned that a man's actions defined him, not the environment he faced. Like all Old Norr, he loved his people with all his heart and learned to fight from an early age. He was a courageous, intelligent and wise young man, and a natural leader.
Skarg was forced to use his skills sooner than he would have liked. After the Battle of the Living Waters, Sorath the Frost Spider and a horde of Demonic Rejects fell upon his domain. Although most of the Old Norr were driven out of the Winterlands after the battle, Skarg was nonetheless praised for his courage, composure and cunning organization, which enabled thousands to escape to safety. Witnesses recount how he single-handedly confronted the demonic scourge.
Many of the surviving Old Norr fled to the Red Peak Mountains and dozens of kingdoms were established, collectively known as Frostheim. Six, including the one led by Skarg, quickly became more dominant than the others. For the ambitious, this period of upheaval was an opportunity to seize power, and although Skarg was highly respected, he knew that these tumultuous times made him a target. In the end, the threat came from his own family. His half-brother, Rakran, who wanted to become king of all the Red Peak Mountains, ambushed Skarg. After a fierce battle, Skarg was left for dead, terribly wounded. He then crawled and hobbled to the valley of Queen Larah, ruler of another of the greatest kingdoms, and sought refuge there. Under her protection, Skarg recovered and prepared his revenge. He was determined to get rid of his brother, but Queen Larah refused to help him, not wishing war. So he crossed the Red Peak Mountains in search of allies to fight Rakran, but in the meantime, his half-brother invaded the queen's territory. Skarg rushed into the valley and waged a guerrilla campaign against Rakran, drawing warriors to him for many months.
Despite the pleas of Rein Larah, the other four main monarchs of the Red Peak Mountains refused to help. They were all waiting for the outcome of the war to see what opportunities would present themselves. Forced to fight alone, Larah and Skarg joined forces. Weeks passed before they succeeded in luring Rakran's army into an ambush. During the horrific bloodbath, Skarg fought his way to his half-brother and, in the fierce duel that followed, cut off Rakran's head with his two-handed sword. The battle was won shortly afterwards, and Skarg reclaimed his former kingdom.
Even though a war had just ended, peace did not reign in Frostheim. There were many skirmishes over land and power, and the minor kingdoms were jealous of the power of the six prominent ones. Skarg feared that this division would leave each kingdom vulnerable to outsiders, so he brought together the monarchs of the Old Norr. The rulers and their entourages almost came to blows before Skarg rose to speak, his reputation being the only thing that prevented bloodshed. He spoke fervently of the treachery and dangers the Norr had had to overcome to obtain what they had in the Red Peak Mountains, convincing them that unity and peace were better than greed and conflict. He proposed a union of all Old Norr in the Red Peak Mountains. Disputes would be resolved peacefully, and no kingdom would ever face attack alone. Few could deny his wisdom. Thanks to Skarg, the Frostheim Confederation was born.
And yet, not everyone was happy. Dozens of monarchs and warlords felt forced to accept a life of relative poverty compared to their more powerful neighbors, so they invaded Kaerok to obtain the wealth and status they couldn't find in Frostheim. This war migration lasted for decades, and the natives of Frostheim were defeated. Many kings and queens were killed and, in their absence, the remaining monarchs enlarged and consolidated their holdings so that all of Frostheim was controlled by the six most powerful kingdoms. Only a pitiful number of warlords returned to contest this state of affairs, and Skarg confirmed that the Confederation would henceforth have only six rulers.
Impressed by Skarg's vision, the Arbiter went to the monarchs and offered them a Shard. She recognized Skarg's influence and offered to trade his freedom for the immortality a Shard could offer. While he knew that this meant his influence could be extended beyond the limits of his mortal life, Skarg also knew that accepting meant he would never taste life again, unless he was called upon to help his people. His agreement came with one condition: that only a ruler of Frostheim could summon him.
Although the Confederation was replaced by the Kingdom of Frostheim long ago, and the winter mansion is now the lair of the Ice Golem, Skarg's legacy has not disappeared. His place in history is preciously preserved in songs that celebrate this proud warrior, whose noble words and bold deeds forged a bright future for the Red Peak Mountains. And like a sleeping giant, his power remains at the ready, waiting to be awakened again to do battle.
