History of Tormin le Froid
There are many songs about Tormin the King's Hammer, Tormin Orcsbane, Tormin the Smith. Of his exploits and bravery, his cunning and wit, and his loyalty. A hero of a bygone era, he had been considered by some skeptical scholars to be merely a fantasy of dwarven folklore—a generalized character whose traits were borrowed from several historical figures, which explained his long list of titles.
But in reality, Tormin did indeed exist, and the tales of his adventures often contain a grain of truth. Born to a humble blacksmith—as is often the case among the Children of Stone, who revere the art of metalworking—Tormin began learning the trade as soon as he was strong enough to hold a hammer.
He was talented and strong, but he had a hot temper and often found himself in conflict with others. It was during one such quarrel that Tormin wounded the apprentice of a rival blacksmith and was captured by the Jarl's guards. His fate might have been grim had it not been for the frequent orc raids that were troubling the Jarl's domain at the time.
All able-bodied warriors could be useful against raiders, and so Tormin was faced with a choice: be imprisoned for his crime or be enlisted in the militia. He chose the latter. The saga then describes Tormin's service to the Jarl, which lasted a decade and saw him rise from a simple foot soldier to a trusted sergeant. It is said that he single-handedly defended a narrow bridge across a chasm, repelling dozens of orc warriors.
Several orc camps were attacked and razed, and the bandits who led the raids were killed by the dwarf scouts under his command. His bravery was enough to catch the Jarl's attention, and when the king gathered an army to march alongside his human allies, Tormin was also called upon. It may have been a stroke of luck that Tormin caught the king's attention when he alone survived a bloody battle against the undead and returned to the main army with a warning that would prove crucial to securing victory.
Such resilience and determination were worthy of a true dwarf, and Tormin was put into the king's service. A particularly popular story tells how Tormin was taken prisoner by the Jotuns—a race of giants from the Mountains of Despair—and used his cunning to escape. He convinced the Jotun chief that he could forge a weapon worthy of such an illustrious leader if given the tools and materials to work with.
The chieftain, driven by his thirst for power and aware of the legendary blacksmithing skills of the dwarves, agreed. Tormin kept his word and used everything he had been given to forge a magical hammer of impressive power. But instead of giving it to the Jotuns, he turned it against them. The magic of Rimefire—as Tormin had named his weapon—was unleashed, allowing him to slay many enemies, confusing the others and enabling him to escape.
The tales of his adventure inspired countless songs praising the ingenuity of the dwarves and mocking the greed of the jotun chieftain. Tormin himself served the king for decades, until his sudden disappearance in the frozen north of Teleria. No one knows exactly what he was doing there, or what happened. Some say Tormin was betrayed. Left for dead in a pool of his own frozen blood, he swore vengeance and traded his soul to an evil winter spirit that dwells in the frozen peaks of the winterlands.
Others claim that Tormin hunted down a powerful lord of the Lych, but was mortally wounded. Only Sir Nicholas' intervention allowed the dwarf warrior to survive, though the price was high. Some even deny Tormin's survival, claiming that he perished in the frozen wastes, far, far from the eyes of mortals, and that neither his remains nor his mighty weapon will ever be found. Yet this ancient saga has recently been given new life, as scouts have returned, terrified and frozen, from their mission beyond the realm of the Mountain King.
They spoke of a terrible blizzard that enveloped their group and a lone dwarf who passed through the storm unscathed, silent and clad in ice armor. He led the scouts from the treacherous mountain to the valleys below, but did not speak a single word to them. More importantly, the stranger wielded a powerful warhammer of silver and ice. Although he disappeared without a trace once the task was complete, this mysterious benefactor caught the attention of the dwarf monarch, and new, better-equipped groups are already preparing to venture north to bring their long-lost brother home.
Even among the great dwarves of yore, whose sagas have echoed for centuries in the carved underground halls, Tormin, son of Bonur, is a name often praised above others. Descended from a humble blacksmith, he rose to prominence in the service of his jarl and counted himself among the king's champions. His adventures were many, his exploits mighty, and no bard can recount them in a single night.
But there is one story that always makes young adventurers' eyes light up. One day, after getting lost in the Mountains of Despair, Tormin was captured by a vicious tribe of Jotuns and forced into hard labor. Despite his great strength, even such a renowned warrior would have had no chance alone, so Tormin had to rely on his wits and cunning. He promised to forge a weapon of great power for the giant chieftain, on the condition that they bring him silver ingots from the depths of the mountain and blocks of frozen ether, found only at the highest peaks.
Enthused by the promise of such generosity, the Jotun chief agreed and ordered his tribes to deliver everything his prisoner requested. And so, for fifteen days, Tormin carved and forged the mythical elements, drawing on all his skill and experience. Then, after weeks of grueling work, he finally held a powerful hammer, its handle as cold as the Void itself. Yet it burned with arcane power, and Tormin had named it aptly: Rimefire.
When the Jotun chief stepped forward to claim his prize, Tormin seized his chance and struck his captors! The power of his hammer was such that he struck down a dozen giants in one blow and turned a dozen others into ice statues. Before the rest of the tribe's warriors could reach him, Tormin struck the side of the mountain and caused a great avalanche as he fled.
It is said that when Tormin disappeared, decades later, among the steep peaks of the Mountains of Despair in the far north, Rimefire was also lost. Since that day, countless adventurers have braved the deadly mountain ranges in hopes of finding this legendary weapon. So far, none have succeeded, and many have lost their lives. But the promise of glory continues to call brave souls across Teleria...
