History of Versulf Le Lugubre
Many bards prefer to sing of good kings, just kings whose hearts bleed for the misfortunes of their people and who devote each day to alleviating those very misfortunes. But, alas, it is in the nature of mortals to let greed, pride, and ambition lead them astray. Such is the case with King Versulf, nicknamed the Sinister One because of his lack of humor and his cruelty.
He once ruled a prosperous city-state in the lands that would become the Stormwind Wastes, and his wickedness was so great that even death could not put an end to it. Nothing mattered more to Versulf than temporal power, which is why he waged numerous wars against neighboring states.
His subjects suffered greatly under the yoke of the exorbitant taxes that Versulf demanded to finance his projects and the horrible living conditions in which they were gradually forced to live. But while the king was heartless and cruel, he was not stupid.
Around him, a coterie of sycophants and devoted bodyguards gathered; Versulf granted them dominion over all others to plunder and exploit them at will. Versulf feared only one enemy: death. Although he mocked and defied the preachers of Lumaya, in his private moments, the tyrant dreaded what would happen when his mortal shell could no longer hold him.
Like so many others, he sought counsel from the masters of dark magic within his court and beyond, but the voracious hunger of undead death held no appeal for him. Finally, it was the emissary of K'leath's death cult who managed to capture Versulf's attention by promising to resurrect him in a new and stronger form in exchange for his patronage.
And so a new and terrible alliance was forged. Versulf devoted the rest of his life to strengthening his ties with the cult. He had given them slaves, sacrificial victims, and riches in abundance, and their hold on the kingdom grew stronger by the day. In return, the priests of K'leath performed horrific rituals to prolong the tyrant's life and prepare his spirit for the inevitable demise.
Legends say that he lived for no less than four hundred years and that he perished in terrible suffering when his body finally collapsed, ravaged by countless ailments and unable to withstand the ravages of time. Yet the cult of K'leath persisted, evolving into the militant sect known today as the Knights of the Revenant. So too did the alliance they had forged.
The time has come, and after centuries of slumber, the ancient king has risen again. In his new body charged with arcane energies, the sinister Versulf seeks to reclaim the power he wielded long ago.
His city may now be nothing more than dust and ruins, but he commands many cultists and has seized the key to the Chest of Oblivion. The chest holds the mysteries of life and death that would allow Versulf's spirit to change bodies at will, ending his need for the cult.
It will take a brave summoner to thwart the tyrant's plans and bring him into Lumaya's fold, for although he is an evil creature, his martial skills and power remain a considerable asset that could be used in the war against the Shadow.
