History of Xena: Warrior Princess
Across the Deadlands and the Krohkan Desert, stories are told of a mercenary once thirsty for blood. Her name was Xena, and she carved a path littered with the bodies of her victims across the arid Steppes, the scorched Lands, and the treacherous Hell Basin, becoming one of the most powerful and ruthless warriors ever seen on the continent of Peltas, leaving a trail of destruction in her wake.
At least, until she received a visit from a mysterious stranger in a dream. The person who asked Xena to seek forgiveness for the pain she had caused and to embark on a journey in which she would defend the weak and fight against injustice. The character who had brought her there was the feeling of finding her path. Xena couldn't deny that the character had moved her. She remembered the words of an old friend: "Killing isn't the only way to prove you're a warrior." She had laughed at him at the time, but now she was sure she had been wrong. As Xena opened her mouth to question the character, she woke up, and even though the character was gone, the feeling remained.
The next morning, Xena went to meet the Nomad clans, protecting them from the Demon Spawn, orc bandits, soul thieves, and Velyzari slavers. To her surprise, she made friends and became one of their resisters. A strong woman joined her. The legend of Xena, the warrior spread across the continent as clans everywhere heard of a fierce warrior who defended those who could not defend themselves.
When the mysterious stranger appeared again in Xena's dream, she told Xena to return home to help her own people. She left as soon as she woke up, and ten leagues away, she heard members of a local tribe talking about a clan led by a violent warrior who was killing and pillaging mercilessly throughout Hell's Basin. Fear would be her heart. As she drew nearer, Xena heard of more and more atrocities. Resolution slowly replaced her fear. She would not allow her people to continue to suffer.
When Xena reached Hell Basin, she saw thick black smoke rising into the air behind a hill. From the top, she looked down into a valley where a village was ablaze. Rough figures were dragging people out of their homes and lining them up to be executed. A mass of bodies was already piled up, and the looters were stripping them. Xena watched in horror as a group of children tried to escape before being grabbed and led before the executioner. Unable to contain her fury, Xena screamed and charged into the village, her cries attracting the attention of the looters. She dispatched the executioner in seconds, then urged the children and other survivors to flee, even as the warriors prepared to attack her. Then a blood-curdling scream pierced the air. The raiders stopped and lowered their weapons, stepping aside to let a woman pass, clearly their war chief. Xena recognized her face. It was forever etched in her mind, that of a child watching helplessly as Xena killed her parents in a bloody rage. Xena's heart filled with guilt, but she nevertheless readied her blade. The clan's evil deeds could not continue.
The war chief screamed that Xena's head belonged to her and her alone. Xena did not want to kill the war chief; enough blood had already been shed. She apologized desperately, trying to convince the war chief that she had changed and that terror would not win out over the past. Her cries fell on deaf ears, and the warlord charged. They fought for hours, Xena on the defensive. She dodged hammer blows that would have crushed her skull and blade strikes that would have ripped her open. She realized that this was their final battle. In a final attempt to end the deadly combat, Xena swung a war axe and threw a bleeding blow at her. It cut through the war chief's armor and her sin. Xena fell, cracking low in her head, feeling painfully. As she gasped for breath, she collapsed again and fell. It seemed that no matter what she did, it was impossible to escape the repercussions of her past.
Having saved the village, Xena returned to her own clan, dejected. The evil that had spread was a direct consequence of her actions. That night, the mysterious stranger reappeared in a dream. Xena did not protest or ask questions; she simply sat there. The mere presence of the stranger calmed Xena's heart. This calm was neither absolution nor forgiveness; but it was something, a sense of responsibility, a call to continue to right the wrongs of her former life by protecting the innocent and defending the weak. A call that Xena decided she would answer for the rest of her life.
