History of Zinogre l'Epeiste (Zinogre Blademaster)
Before they became Yakai, before they were called the Dawn Mountains, the wild lands of eastern Palatine were often given another name: the Land of Beasts. Wild because they offered a comfortable habitat for all kinds of creatures, from the shapeshifting kitsune to the mischievous fire monkey, from the majestic star bear to the fiery aurora wolf. Although centuries of war and urbanization have disrupted much of this delicate ecosystem, the Yakai people still try to live in harmony with the original inhabitants of their lands whenever possible.
No one exemplifies this attitude better than the Moju. These trackers migrate alongside the good number of Yakai species, seeking to protect them from poachers and unscrupulous hunters, and they warn estate and farm owners that dangerous beasts could soon be around the corner.
Born into one of the many Moju migration patrols, Haru was a talented trapper. Her parents boasted that she had made her first snare before she could walk, and by then her pastries were almost completely silent. A godsend, since Haru was always on the move, constantly venturing beyond the boundaries of her clan's patrol to observe the movements of the beasts that had also guarded themselves. After spending his entire childhood on the road, Haru's patrol finally settled in a small hamlet on the sinister Opal River, acting as guides for his growing community of farmers and fishermen.
During a routine surveillance of the hamlet's farm borders, Haru noticed that someone had tampered with his snares: each of their delicate mechanisms had been expertly disarmed. Looking closely, Haru noticed the telltale sign of claw marks. A cunning Skinwalker? A stray Shredder looking to taunt his would-be captor? After following the trail of unarmed pieces, she saw a small figure leaning over one of them in a shady grove. With her characteristic beehive and grabbing her two daggers, she tiptoed closer. What Haru saw was a cat standing on its hind legs, manipulating one of her creations.
Curiosity taking precedence over fear, Haru greeted the creature. The creature let out a piercing scream and turned to face its assailant. On her chest, like the creator of the snares this mysterious creature had disarmed. She praised Haru for his ingenuity, claiming that his traps were unlike anything she'd seen made by the hunting hands of her own world. Suggesting it was a fairy being, Haru rummaged in his bag for a small offering and plunged to the ground in deep reverence, hoping the creature's gaze wouldn't steal his soul. The cat laughed, replying that he wasn't a forest god or a magical spirit, but a Palico, a being who studied the tracks of a monster from his world: a Zinogre.
While she was still not convinced that this wasn't some kind of manufactured game, Haru listened to the Palico's words. He described a grandiose creature who could channel lightning through his body. Fearing that this monster might disrupt the animals' delicate migration paths or turn its wrath on his hamlet, Haru offered to lend his blades to help the Palico. The creature replied that while they were sufficient to deal with small animals, Haru's blades and his current roommate's traps would be no match for this monster. However, Haru's blades were identical to a weapon the Palico had seen many times during his adventures with hunters from his world. Struck by inspiration, he reached into his bag and pulled out a scrolled tomato offered by his previous hunter, filled with instructions explaining not only how to defeat such a beast, but also offering suggestions on the equipment needed to do so.
Haru took the manual and the Palico in her arms, and ran home, electrified by the idea of taking on this grandiose challenge. She burst into a local blacksmith's shop, terrifying the old blacksmith with tales of talking cats and otherworldly monsters. She presented the Palico manual to the blacksmith and they set to work, making Haru a set of blades that could pierce the skin of her mysterious prey.
After a restless night's sleep, Haru and the Palico set off, following the ancient migration paths that Haru's patrol had guarded for centuries. Along the way, they exchanged stories of ancient hunts and beautiful creatures from their respective worlds. As they meandered along beaten paths, they discovered burnt branches and split tree trunks, and heard a roar in the distance. They were getting closer.
The ensuing chase was immortalized in the Song of the Lightning Dancer by local lyricists, who described how Haru clamored through the air with her blades gleaming like the moon as she fought the monster. Other, more dramatic versions involve hunting in a violent storm, during which these lightning bolts would appear along with Zinogre's ground-shaking roars. All that's certain about the battle is Haru's victory, and the crackling armor and weapons she now wears with pride.
