Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 takes place in a world where a mysterious entity, the Painter, paints a decreasing number on his monolith. All humans whose age matches that number disappear immediately.
This year, the figure stands at 33, and you play as the members of the last expedition sent to stop him. Here is the full story of this Turn-based RPG signed Sandfall Interactive, released on April 24, 2025, without spoiling the major plot twists for you.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: Synopsis
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is published by Kepler Interactive and available at computer, PS5 and Xbox Series. The story takes place in a dreamlike world called Lumière, somewhere between the beautiful and the tragic.
Once a year, the Painter (Paintress) wakes up and paints a cursed number on his monolith. All the inhabitants whose age matches that number immediately vanish in a cloud of mist. It is not a fixed age: Every year, the number decreases by one.
So the inhabitants die one year younger with each cycle. Along with them, the past, old age, memories, and a part of world history disappear. This moment has a name: the Gommage.
You're part of the’Shipping 33, one of the last to set sail for the monolith. Your mission can be summed up in one sentence: eliminate the Painter so that she will never again paint death.
First of all, you embody Gustave, accompanied by Maelle, the youngest member of the group. Other companions such as Lune, Sciel or the enigmatic Verso will join the adventure as you journey on.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: The Story of a Desperate Mission
The story begins on Lumière, an isolated island in the middle of the ocean, cut off from the rest of the world since 67 years old. This separation stems from the Fracture, an event that shook the world and brought monsters into being, but which also allowed Lumière to build up its defenses.
Then a huge monolith bearing the number “100” appeared on the horizon. The residents quickly realized that it was a countdown : The mysterious Painter erases it and rewrites it, each time a little lower down.
Exfoliation Day, Everyone whose age is inscribed on the monolith vanishes into petals and ashes. Every year, Lumière holds a farewell ceremony for those who will vanish at sunset.
As early as the year 100, when the monolith first appeared, Lumière sent an expedition to the main world to find out what was going on. One Survivor came back from it.
Since then, a group of volunteers willing to die before their time has formed to send out a new expedition every year in an attempt to kill the Painteress. All the Previous attempts have failed. The residents eventually began to wonder whether they should have any more children, as their hope was fading so rapidly.
In the year 33, they realized they were approaching a point of no return. Soon, the population will no longer be able to reproduce or keep this countdown going. How many acts are there in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
The game takes place over three Acts, not to mention the Prologue. Each act shifts the perspective to a different character: first Gustave, then Verso, and finally Maelle.
Prologue
The Prologue serves as tutorial and gently introduces turn-based combat mechanics.
You meet Sophia, Maelle and Gustave, and then you discover what's left of Lumière. This introduction plunges you right into the atmosphere of the Annual Scrub and shows you, in a very real way, what it means to see people vanish as the sun sets.
Act 1: Gustave
In the first act, you take control of Gustave, leader of Expedition 33. You'll travel through several zones, each offering new mechanics or rewards:
- Vallons Fleuris (Spring Meadows) : beats the Mime and take this opportunity to complete the available side quest.
- Suspended Ocean (Flying Waters) : You unlock the’weapon upgrades, Lumina's color, and improved shades.
- Ancient Sanctuary (Ancient Sanctuary) : You can get one there powerful weapon to Lune.
- Village des Gestrals (Gestral Village) : Several side quests and challenges await you there.
- Nest of Esquie (Esquie’s Nest) : Once you've crossed the zone, you can ride through it Esquie so you can get around faster.
- Cliffs of Rochevague (Stone Wave Cliffs) : This is where you unlock the ability to swim.
Throughout this act, take the time to’complete side quests and upgrade your gear before continuing.
Act 2: Verso
Act 2 passes the baton to Verso, a mysterious man who joined the group at the end of the first act. You explore two main areas:
- Forgotten Lands (Forgotten Battlefield)
- Monoco station (Monoco’s Station) : You unlock new ones there outfits and access to an optional high-level area (Frozen Hearts).
This act also offers you boss (optional) formidable. Go through the Monoco Station First to prepare yourself before facing them.
Act 3: Maelle
Act 3 puts you in control of Maelle for the the final hours of the adventure. The world then opens up almost entirely, allowing you to explore the optional areas you’ve skipped and unlock the secrets you missed. This is also the time for The Toughest Optional boss Models. Make sure to get your gear ready before heading out to the final battle.
In terms of the story, this act strings together the plot twists around the Painter. These revelations call into question almost everything you thought you knew about this world, and lead to a crucial decision which determines the end of your game.
How many possible endings are there in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
There are two main purposes. It all comes down to a only option just before the final battle.

This choice determines the ending of the story and, above all, the’epilogue. Both epilogues are complete, but players remain divided on which one is more memorable.
