Hogwarts Legacy: Main Quests, Secrets of the Library Reserve Walkthrough

In this section of Hogwarts Legacy, you continue your investigation of ancient magic and the pendant in the Library Reserve and uncover other secrets of Hogwarts castle. You learn about the game's stealth mechanics, spend more time with Sebastian Pallow, and take a step closer to understanding ancient magic.

This game of Hogwarts Legacy begins with meeting Professor Fig in his office to inform him of the troll attack at Hogsmeade and to learn that the Professor has discovered a card hidden in the locket by an enchantment. It's a map of Hogwarts, but Fig can't see where it leads. Luckily, you can see traces of ancient magic on the map, indicating something is hidden in the Library Stash. Fig worries about the potential danger and asks you to work with Professor Hecat some more before continuing. We will take a closer look at the unfolding.

Professor Hecat's mission

Hogwarts Legacy Hecat's Homework

Professor Hecat wants to teach you the Incendio spell and asks you to win the first two rounds of Magical Jousting as well as one of Lucan Brattleby's spell combinations. Predictably, Hecat is fully aware of the existence of the unsanctioned Dueling Club.

The first trial is quite simple: you must use Levioso to break the yellow shields of two targets and make good use of Protego and Stupéfix to keep your opponents off balance.

The purpose of the spell combination exercise, where you will have to chain combinations of spells, is to help you learn how to use spells in combination for greater effectiveness in combat. This is a good chance to learn how long you can wait between stages of a combo without the enemy recovering, because there's more time than you initially think, and miss the combo just means having to try again.

For round two, you can choose your partner or go it alone, and it's better to have a partner because you'll be outnumbered. This round is played against three opponents and introduces purple shields. These shields can be broken using Force spells, such as Accio. Pay close attention to the enemy and be ready to deflect spells with Protego, and the fight will soon be over.

Return to Hecat with all that's been done and complete the minigame to learn Incendio, which can be used to create a close-range explosion of flames.

A useful trick is to use Accio to pull an enemy into range before casting this spell, as it can be difficult to gauge range sometimes, and it puts the enemy directly in front of you.

Reserve

Hogwarts Legacy The Library Reserve

Now that you have learned Incendio, you can return to Professor Fig to prepare to visit the Reserve. Unfortunately, Director Black interrupts the conversation and Fig has to leave. You therefore decide to discuss with Sebastian to find out how to enter the Reserve. Luckily, Sebastian is more than willing to help introduce you that evening.

That evening, you join Sebastian in the central hall, and he teaches you the spell of disillusionment. This handy spell makes you transparent and hard to spot, but you'll still be detected if you get too close.

This serves as an introduction to the game's stealth mechanics, and you'll need to dodge a few prefects to reach the door and enter the library. From there, follow Sebastian's instructions and head behind the bookcase, then wait for him to create a diversion and steal the key.

Join Sebastian and head deeper into the library, then use the base spell to lure the first ghost beyond the hallway entrance and sneak up behind him. In the next room, use the basic spell to steer the ghost away from the door and go through it because the chest on the other side is locked and you don't have the spell to open it yet.

After reaching the bottom of the stairs, you can remove your disillusionment spell for now. Sebastian reveals the reason he's constantly sneaking around the Reserve: he's looking for a cure for his sister's illness.

Unfortunately, this moment of quiet and conversation is spoiled by Peeves, and Sebastian rushes off to try to stop him from exposing the duo or at least trying to convince the librarian. This forces you to continue on your own, using Reparo to repair the broken statue and clear the way forward.

Be sure to open the chest before going through the door and down the stairs to a strange archway. Use the ancient magic glowing dot to activate the ark and open a path forward, and grab the chest on the left of the ark for some good loot.

Going through the portal and down the stairs, a chest can be found to the left of a door that leads further. After the door is a huge chasm with another door on the other side, and you'll spawn a path forward by shooting the rune above the door with a basic spell. In the next room there is a battle with other Sentinels like the ones in Vault 12, but they are much easier now that you have access to more combat spells.

You'll also be treated to a quick tutorial on how to restore the ancient magic meter by performing combos, then head into the next room for a precarious follow-up fight. You can use Levioso and the basic spell to knock enemies over the edge with good positioning and combos, then use Lumos to reveal a hidden path on the left side and grab a hidden chest. After that, stand on the edge and shoot the rune, then sprint and get ready to jump because this time the path won't stay long.

In the next room, down the stairs, shoot the rune and look right to see a platform appear. Jump on it, cast Lumos, and run to the end of the path that appears, then hit the rune again and keep following to reach the other hidden chest.

Return to the room and use the rune to create a path through it and keep moving forward. Grab the chests and enter another combat sequence with the Sentinels. The same strategies as before work here, especially knocking them overboard.

In the next room you'll find the book you've been looking for, along with a colander that shows you more memories of Percival Rackham, revealing a time when they used ancient magic to restore a drought-stricken village, and showing their conversation with someone else who joined the group in 5th grade and could see traces of ancient magic, a girl named Isidora Morganach. You then return to the library, where you find Sebastian covering for you with the librarian as he promised you.

Professor Fig closes this part, as he leaves to visit the Ministry of Magic, taking the book to study, and asking you to work hard as a student until he returns. He also notes that some pages of the book have been torn out, meaning someone has already had access to the book.
