Reviews of The Universim

The little review – The Universim

In recent weeks, we have talked a lot about video games. We explored the battlefields of Normandy with Enlisted, fought against hordes of zombies in The Walking Dead, tried to defeat corruption with This Is The Police and we went for a walk in Teyvat on Genshin Impact. And I'll tell you, I'm exhausted. Washed out from fighting, exhausted from fighting, I want to go on vacation, I want to go far, very far… In the depths of our universe, I then found my little happiness, my little piece of land , if you can call it that, where I can breathe and try to sell you this little pearl that I found.

You are watching episode 19 of La P'tite Critique, and today we are going to talk about The Universim.

Like an air of vacation.

The Universim was released on Steam in August 2018, still in beta and developed by the small independent studio Crytivo. The game is therefore a god game like Black and White where you literally become a god who will have to populate the small planet that has just been assigned to you. With this new civilization at your command, named Nuggets, you will be able to help and observe the evolution of your people from the Stone Age to our present time by unlocking the necessary technologies little by little. Through the power you have at your disposal such as healing, weather regulation or even telekinesis, your mission will then be simple; ensure that your Nuggets evolve and in return they will idolize you.

Become a nugget maker.

No time limit or pressing objectives in The Universim because the game is complex, quite complicated to master the first hours, in particular because of these many technological trees, vital for the progress of the game since they are its own trees that will allow your civilization to evolve from the stone age with the discovery of fire and the beginning of a semblance of democratic society, until the space revolution in order to conquer the stars through the age feudal and modern times. But the road will be long for our dear species which has just been born and it will be up to you, invisible divinity, to guide them, whether in the gentle way by treating their illnesses and giving them a little helping hand to move resources, find a lost inhabitant or build a building a little too ambitious for our Nuggets, or the hard way, letting the elements unleash on them, ranging from a simple flash to the fall of a meteorite... Yes, meteorites. Of course, it will be up to you to stay on the lookout for the prayers that your disciples will bring to you, generating you power to allow you to intervene with them, in the event that they pledge unfailing loyalty to you, or against them, if ever some of them try to discredit you.

A flawless DA.

If the Management side is quite complete, ranging from the mood of your inhabitants towards you and their peers to the management of the planet's natural resources with the oxygen level that you will have to keep an eye on during your expansion, the graphic quality of The Universim is one of the strengths that we will remember the most. Even if the view from above does not allow us to take full advantage of it, the artistic direction of the god game is most remarkable, whether with the reflection of the oceans which adorn our planet, passing through the forests and snow-capped mountains which make it delightful our lands. On top of that, the fauna and flora of our territory embellish all that, allowing us to feel the living and active side of this rich environment, which didn't disorient me so much after playing Genshin Impact.

The Universim, it's validated.

Even if I'm not a big fan of management games, preferring city builders such as City Skyline, The Universim remains a game that I particularly like for the calm and soothing side that the title offers us, letting us manage as good seems to us our little Nuggets, evolving little by little over their history. You add to that a shy music but perfectly stuck to the theme, small "quests" in the form of a prayer made by your inhabitants, merchandising with other extra-planetary civilizations up to the management of possible conflict that your people and there you have it, you have the right recipe to take a breather off the explosive battlefields that you can come across on other games.
